It's two years old, but it's been locking up for some times now, and it's getting more frequent.

The entire keyboard locks up, and only a hard reboot will solve the issue, at least until it locks up again.

What could this be??

Trackpad freezes and unresponsive keyboard? It's a known issue with owners of MBPs. Me included.

When it happens I connect a USB keyboard and mouse to get back to work or to restart the MBP until the next time it occurs. Resetting the PRAM will work for a while too.

Apple's answer to this is to replace the keyboard and topcase if you have Apple Care for the MBP.

Wow, I've been looking for a fix to this for some time. I'll try it, thanks!

This is a non-unibody model I assume? I've had the same issue with my MPB twice now, and both the times required the topcase (keyboard, trackpad) to be replaced. I think it's a fairly common issue with that particular laptop.

My MBP (model just before Unibody) mouse locks up occasionally, but the keyboard is fine. I solve the problem by Alt-Tabbing to a different app (usually the Finder), mouse a little, then switch back to the problematic app (usually FileMaker Pro, but sometimes Firefox). Very odd, but I can live with it.

I didn't have the time to bring my MacBook Pro back during the warrant period. Will Apple fix this free of charge, being a known issue?

Your welcome. Give it a try, it should work for a while anyway. It's a short term fix for the trackpad and keyboard freezes. It's something that Apple hasn't acknowledged as a defect yet.

Even though its about known leaks PowerPC G5 it is the way you state your problem to Apple.

Cool heads lead to success. Make sure you have documentation and notes written down when you call. Never get upset but be firm. I don't know if you'll succeed but at least give it a try. You never know unless you try.

Good luck,

I use an Adesso keyboard, because I like a split board, and have never during the 3 years in use has it ever locked up or frozen. Maybe just me and some good luck but use it with the Mac Pro and have never had a problem.

If any others use this keyboard it might be useful to hear from them.
