My favorite printer is still the Kodak XLS 8650. True continuous tone dye sub prints, 8x10 prints in just over one minute, outstanding contrast range and color gamut that has yet to be matched by an ink jet printer and you can usually find them in good condition on eBay for just a couple hundred dollars. (They sold for over 5k when they were introduced)

I own a Epson PM-4000x (US Model: Photo 2100/2200), there is no comparison... nothing can beat this printer.

I paid $500USD in Japan.

I really want to know the different between printing a photo by Fuji Frontier by mini lab and print it at home by Epson's Photo 2100/2200.

I am still thinking whether it is worth to invest Aus$1750 ( US $950) to buy this printer, it is very expensive in Australia.

My advice, buy it... you won't regret. it prints just like photo especially if u used the pro semigloss photo paper (PM/MC Semigloss in JP). It'll look and feel like matt finish photo from lab. And you can also print in 13x19 or watercolor-like paper or anything u can imagine.. and will not fade like b4.

I love the Canon S9000. I have never seen a print of this quality before from any consumer printer. 13x19 prints are better than any chemical photo I have seen, and it is a lot cheaper than dye-sub with much better results.

2200 Is a fabulus printer. Blows away anything I've seen before
including a 1270 and lab photographic prints.

Well I got the 9000 but honestly I am very disappointed as I can't get it to print acceptably. It is very grainy and artificial. I am using a cheap Officemax photopaper admittedly (and tech support had me adjust to plain paper with slight improvement) but frankly it's worthless. I saw the HP 7550 print on the same paper with SPECTACULAR results. I'll try Canon paper and see if that helps but I feel like I wasted 400.00.--

Oh here we go again, I have not read all posts, but if anyone else supports that Epson printer again, I will assume you are all on the payroll.
I own a D100 and am looking for the best printer now on the market.
It appears that the two contenders are the Stylus 2200 and the
Canon S 9000. What is your opinion please?

Fred, tahts too bad...I hate to hear when someoen feels like they waisted their money. I felt that way when I purchased the Epson 2000, now taht was money thrown to the hogs. And yes, taht type of feeling sucks. I do reliazed that you need to check all settings and taht you need to use the proper paper, but by now means should it be a laborious inconvenient and dissappointing experience.

My advice is, don't buy it. Epson traditionally have been overproced in anything they do, and once you haev teh printer the ink will cost you an arm and a leg, as well as the specially papers you will need to purchase and the time spent in calibratig and profiling that printer...you could be building your own printer out of toothpicks and glue.

It depends on what you want out of your printer at the end of the day. I've got the 2200 and it's perfect for me. I haven't seen an S9000 prints so I can't directly compare the two but from what I hear the quality of prints from both machines is brilliant (with maybe the 2200 edging out the S9000).

The S9000 is quick (very quick) and the 2200 is slow - I know from experience. But if you're prepared to wait for the print then you won't be disappointed.

In the end, my decision for the 2200 was based on it's ability to print long panorama prints (which the S9000 can't do). I've printed out an image that was 160 cm long by 33 cm wide. It's nice to have the ability to do that.

Good luck with your choice. I'm sure you won't be disappointed either way.
