4 those stuck in Stoneage thinking, no Video with DSLR

I wonder how much that cost Canon?

I think the right question is how much Canon will gain after that move. That's quite some smart PR, and I'm pretty sure Canon stands behind it. Technically you can grab a D3S for the exact same purpose, and let's not get into the talk about Nikkor glass vs Canon L.

If Olympus PR dept is at least half as adept we wouldn't hear too many stories about the demise of 4/3 and such.

Hi,

Interesting post. But, for example, if the E-620 was a truly video enabled DSLR (with quiet focusing and zooming), it would always be necessary to market alongside an E-600 without it... because many people want a DSLR first, a video camera second (and not at the expense of affordability).

A "pro" or "expert" DSLR (such as the E-3 or E-30) should have it though.

Yes, this is quite obvious.

Jon,

Do not take me wrong. The E-620 is $600 with two lenses. Adding video would add another $100 or more.Manufacturer can not just add POOR video and let reviewers and owners to put the whole camera down. Also those who want video want the good one.
Here's a video and thread from Tim (Stimmer) Higdon he shot with an EP2 http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1041&message=34956388 . This is pretty well done, the quality is there and I'm not so sure it would add $100 to the body since the technology is already developed. I have shot some video from my ep2 and was pleasantly surprised at the quality and how nice it is. If you don't use it fine but it is the way of the photographic world and here to stay.

Full disclosure here, I never thought I'd use video. Never say never....

One caveat is editing, you'll need software to do this and there in lies the expense, not to mention the time to learn both the video process and the editing process. Yes it won't be for everyone.....

Well, I am one of those who do not need video in still camera. The lack of video capability would be not breaking deal if I would be on market for a new camera (I am not, I am happy with my E-620 :) )

But - at the same time I think it would be a good bonus to have video in DSLR camera, for some occassional use. I had P&S in the past time and used video couple of times to capture the moment...

And I do not think that video capability increases the price of nowadays cameras. Video in Oly cameras -> more users buy Oly -> higher production -> lower price ;)

...I buy DSLR's to take pictures and I'm not intrerested in video, sure they can do great video but for me I would rather the time spent on photo image quality improvements but I guess if Oly want to sell enough cameras then video is needed.

Here's the deal, Frank. No, I don't think video in a DSLR is a gimmick. As you've shown video from a DSLR can be very good, and I agree the Canon 5DII looks to still produce good photos. The issue for me is simply this, I'm not interested in video in my DSLR and would prefer all R&D efforts be concentrated on the still end of things. Nevertheless, I recognize the reality of marketing and expect to see video in upcoming Oly DSLRs.

But yeah.. that bold move by the House director to shoot the finale with the 5D is a ground breaking step.

Might help out the entire DSLR market and industry in general, even OLY once they tune in.

My understanding was that he used it to get shallower depth of field than was available from sub-35mm video cams. The Panasonic 4/3 video cam with HG and SHG lenses would, as others have said, probably offer more features that a movie-maker would want than does a video-enabled DSLR. I would say that, of course, because I suggested, back here http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1022&message=34650730 that the way ahead from Panasonic is extracting stills from video, so no need for DSLRs at all :)

Mike

Bill,

Hard not to agree. My main problem is the time to be spent on editing. It is so easy to record hours of movies then even more hours to be spent editing them. I am overloaded with still images and allow others who like to shoot/edit movies to be happy.
Leo

Actually what I wold like is a video camera that takes decent still images, but I guess I'll have to wait for the bronze age for that to come out. ;)

This forum seems to have become more civilized, seeing that you have not received any really nasty replies that your overly provocative title invites.

I am with you about the benefits of video on dslr. I am pleased to see that video is now called a "bonus" where it would have been called a "burden" not so long ago. Generally, it is accepted now video will need to come to Oly dslr. I wish, though, nobody deliberated provoke the fanatics and poison the air here.

On the other hand, people who do not care about video are probably having a good time picking up used Oly lenses at very good prices recently. This may be their compensation for having to put up with us bitching about Oly being far behind with video in dslr.

Hey.. a little spice and tabasco in the pablum can't hurt this forum from time to time, sometimes its fun to stoke the dying embers.

You know, that might be a great question, but for me, being a big fan of the show, I now eagerly look forward to this final episode.

I think it was a brilliant move on behalf of Canon. You can't take it away from them, their advertising and marketing is the best. I suppose they have buckets of money to throw at things like this. but you have to know, that unless the equipment performed to their high quality demands.. there is no way in hades that the producers and director of this award winning TV show would risk such a move.

Kudos to Canon! And yes. .I believe this move will lend great credence to the arrival of high grade broadcast quality video in a DSLR package, regardless of brand and Oly will no doubt benefit greatly as well.
Frank

you become one when you leave civility behind and start your post---right in the subject header!---with an insult. thanks for that, jerk.

Same feeling here. The author showed the level right from the beginning. I wonder how exactly this forum is moderated, to allow such stuff to go through.

PS - frankjules, there was no sunrise from the West this morning (I checked, as promised). Should I hold my breath for tomorrow ? Oh, also, should I kneel if the opening episode for next season is shot with a point and shoot ?

oh.. so you have taken it upon yourself to declare me a troll.. hmmm.. well thanks! I guess you have your own certain criteria, seems most people who posted here took my post with a grain of salt and understood the sarcasm in good fun. I am truly sorry and humbly apologize for piercing your sensitive troll detecting skin. Perhaps it might prove prudent in the future for you to ignore any future thread I may post, and thereby helping yourself and me at the same time.
Thanks kindly for your response, I value it a great deal.
Best

I certainly wouldn't take anything away from Canon's marketing division. It's definitely a brilliant advertising move. I'll be interested in seeing how the gear performs. Just remember that these folks have far more experience in post than we do ;)
