Is there any way to keep the fps up to 8 in low light? I was shooting the other night and it dropped down to about 3 and I had it set to high!! Any one have an answer?

Unfortunately a known issue, even documented in the manual.

Until Canon fixes the firmware, even M mode won't help.

If the shutter speed is slow (e.g. low light, at night, etc..), of course the fps will slow down. You need time to properly expose the image. No firmware can fix that.

If your shutter speed is too slow, obviously you can't get 8FPS.

The other issue could be C.Fn. III-2. If you have that set to default, the camera will choose to give focus priority over drive mode. Obviously, it takes longer to focus in low light, so this will slow your drive mode down even more. You can change this setting, however.

Yes....it is known that if you're shooting with a very slow shutter speed, you can't get 8FPS on the 7D, or max out frame rates on any other camera.

What? You can shoot in M mode in ANY lighting, set the shutter speed high enough and shoot at 8FPS. M mode has nothing to do with the problem the OP stated.

One of two things will cause this. It's either having major focus trouble and the focus is chasing. Or, you need a faster lens that you can open up, or worst case scenario crank up the iso, allowing you a shutter speed of 1/8 of a second or faster.

It has nothing to do with a slow shutter speed..

In low light, the 7D shoots at 3 fps no matter what.

Try for yourself, set your camera to M, 1/1000 shutter speed f/whatever. Set your lens to manual focus and burst speed to high. Now go somewhere dark & try to get 8fps. You can't, no matter what your custom functions are set at.

You can even play with your light switch while in burst mode.. Lights off - 3fps, lights on 8fps, off, back to 3fps. This with everything set to manual and a shutter speed of 1/1000th (or faster if you like)

Yes, there is.

Set the camera to Tv or M mode and hold down the * (exposure lock) button while shooting. Alternatively, shoot in Live View mode.

You can get 8 fps even with the lens cap on.

Interesting.. I just tried.. The * trick works TV mode (provided you have the * button set to exposure lock), but still doesn't work in M.

The experience that I had- I had everything set to manual, and like the one said, it makes no difference... I even changed my custom fn. to make it priority. I guess we'll have to wait for a firmware upgrade.

Hm... I don't have my 7D with me right now, but I remember trying a million possible combinations when I got it, and I'm pretty sure that worked in M too. Maybe it was just Tv and Live View.

Anyway, the problem seems to be in the metering. For some reason, when it's dark, the camera goes through some part of the metering algorithm that is delaying it, even when it should skip it (ex., in manual mode).

Looks like it should be fixable with a firmware update, but to be honest it's not at the top of my priority list. I very rarely shoot candle-lit sports. ;)

I just tried what you said, and it does work in Tv but not in manual. The problem is that I also need a fairly high f/stop, and in Tv that don't work! Come on Canon!!!

Great tip. It is mind-boggling to me why the 7D is doing any metering at all when in M mode. It was clear that metering, though, was the cause of the slowdown in low light even though it should not be necessary. Great to hear the * button disables this strange behavior. Who would have thought the exposure lock function would have any effect in M mode?

Truly bizarre, but thanks for posting that workaround. First time I heard of it.

[EDIT: I don't have my camera with me now, so I am trusting that Will's tip is actually true! I'll try it later in the day.]

Which I guess makes the bug even weirder. If you switch to Live View, you can shoot at 8 fps in manual for sure (I clearly remember getting 8 fps in manual mode with the lens cap on, but now I'm thinking maybe I only tested that in live view, which I had switched to after testing Tv mode).
The problem is that I also need a fairly high f/stop, and in Tv that don't work!
Use negative EV compensation (turn the dial on the back)? You can go down to -5 stops (although the top LCD will only show -3). Or aim the camera at something bright before pressing AE lock.

Oh, and call or e-mail Canon about it. They're more likely to hurry up with a fix if people complain.

How low are the light levels that we're talking about? I've been down to ISO 6400, 1/60th at f/4 with no significant decrease in frame rate.
