Today i finally did it, i bought a new D300s together with the AF-S 16-85mm VR, AF-S 70-300mm VR and the Speedlight SB-900. It took some time to choose between the Canon 7D and the Nikon D300s, but at the end i walked out the store with some nice nikon equipment under my arms. I,am a very happy Nikon owner. :D
Tomorrow i,am going to take some pictures, and post them later.

Congrats! That's a nice kit you have. I had the D300 and wanted a D300 in FX form and moved to the D700, but still, I have a special place in my heart for the 300. Enjoy!

Congrats, me too having been a former long term Canon owner( AE1 through to EOS 5D+ L Lenses) but starting again from scratch I to debated long and hard between the 7D and d300s and finally chose the d300s and 16-85 lens and very happy with my choice.

Enjoy, I know I am

Hi Marcel,

Welcome to Nikon! I have the D300s. I'm very happy with the speed and accuracy of the AF. I also like and use the move mode.

Why did you decide on the D300s over the 7D?

Thanks,
Bob

I have to admit, it was a difficult decision.

I liked the Canon ergonomics very much ,the 1080p recording is very interesting and 18MP is very tempting.
But what really did it for me to choose Nikon was:
-Nikon colors
-Overall image quality
-Nikons creative lighting system
-Support for GPS tracker
-Spot metering can be linked to any AF point
-Not so good first experience with Canon(quality control)
-And to be honest, don't need 18mp

BTW, i,am still looking for a suitable backpack for all my gear.
Does anyone have some suggestions perhaps?

Marcel,

I've a D300s, 16-85, 70-300 and a sb600. I recently bought a lowepro fastpack 200. Only used it so far during ski trips, but it works great. Easy access to your camera and provides some extra space for a day trip. I didn't want a huge backpack, so I stayed with the 200, which is just big enough for my gear. If you plan to expand with extra lenses, get the 250.

google it and you'll find some reviews.

Hi again,

I have a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW which I am fairly happy with. It is a bit heavy but very flexible and weather tight in it's own but there is an extra cover which comes with it and if you pull that over it can handle even tropical, very heavy rain. I tested it and it works great, everything is kept dry inside the bag. Mine is fairly old and I looked at the latest model the other day. The new model is considerably lighter in weight, which is an advantage if you intend to carry for a full day several days in a row.

How much gear do you want to carry at one time? (The gear you have now, or the gear you may end up with in a couple of years?)

Check out the Thinktank web site. Great stuff.

I have a smallish waist bag, and a backpack. Backpack holds a lot (but they have smaller models). Here's what my Thinktank Airport Accelerator looks like loaded up:

I have the Lowepro 200 slingshot and it carries the 10-24, 55-200 and the 16-85 attached to my D300s. The SB600 strobe fits into the top compartment and there's lots of pockets for batteries and memory cards plus a waterproof cover. It's great for easy access.

Good luck with your new gear.

+1 on the Lowepro Mini Trekker AW, there great value and super comfortable to wear even for long periods. Have tons of space especially for the kit you have, and even room to add a few more lenses later on...

Congrats on the new camera. I got mine last week with the SB-900. I was thinking about the 7D for the video but in the end the photography was more important and after 25 years of using Nikon I just couldn't make the switch

Congrat's on your purchase! I got my d300s, 18-200vrII, 50mm 1.8, and LowePro slingshot 200AW at christmas. I love the set up and recently added macro tubes, wireless remote shutter and gps. I have room for everything in my 200AW except a notebook computer, which I think is the 300AW, can't be sure. Either way, I've travelled with this set up quite nicely and as I add equipment, I can pack what I need for particular shoots in it and leave the excess at home or stick external lens bags on it if I need more. LowePro's are nice this way.

Good Luck!

300AW = For when you get a 70-200mm 2.8, which won't fit in the 200AW.

350AW = For when you want to bring along a notebook computer.

I have the 300AW, and love it.

wouldn't this be considered a "downgrade". Surely even an old 5D with L Lens can outperform our setup?
