I bought the 7d about a month ago and I am just trying to figure it all out. Here are some pictures I took. The first couple were at the Carrie Underwood concert, I used 85mm, 1.8 len, took them aperture pritority, set the ISO to 6400. Do you think that it looks ok? I didnt do any post processing. I did take them raw too. I just need to decide what software I want to purchase.

For available light at a concert, I think they're great. Back in the day, I took my film SLR into a couple of concerts and found that it really ticked off the guys policing the stage front, even without using a flash. Between that, and the hands I'd catch trying to get into my camera bag when I was in a thick crowd, I decided it wasn't worth the hassle! Were you able to take many pictures from that vantage point?

And the horse photo...great!

Thanks, I was in the third row. Nobody bothered me all, and they didnt check bags on the way in.

I was just curious what everyone thought of the sharpness of the 7d. I am such a beginner at this.

Your 1st 2 shots show how well the 7D performs at high ISO... Nice

The last shot of the horse is quite good. Love the composition and the DR (dynamic range) overall of the shot. It really shows in the dark/light areas of the nose and mouth. All detail is preserved. Not sure why the eyes turned out so dark though. It would be interesting to see what fill light for the eyes would do to this shot. Perhaps a catch-light would compliment this shot? Keep up the good work.

I wasn't able to get the sound to work on the Carrie Underwood pic though. She is a phenomenally gifted artist.

So you think my 7d looks sharp. I just have read many issues on focus and I have had other shots that were not so in focus but was chalking it up to user error. J.

DPP from Canon is very good but I would try Adobe Lightroom...they have a beta version that is free until it goes on sale.

A little bit of a learning curve with Lightroom, but is one of the best IMHO.

A quick preset with sharpening in Lightroom works great....try 100-0.5-25 settings.

BTW...Carrie Underwood is hot! What was Tony Romo thinking dumping her for Jessica? :-)

Soon to be Carrie Fisher...and Canadian! ;-)

So you would recommend adobe lightroom? Do they have a version for mac? I have the latest 15inch macbook pro laptop. J.

The Carrie Underwood photos came out great, especially at iso 6400!

Would you mind sharing what your AF settings were? I shot a concert last week with my new 7d and got alot of OOF shots.

Had it the focus set to one shot. I was trying to read what maybe the best setting to get the best shots as some of my earlier photos didnt look too sharp or the back ground or foreground looked sharper.

Is adobe lightroom expensive or do they have a student version. Does this take the place of photoshop or do I still need that? Lots of newbe questions sorry.

I could say it is this & that but you have to feel comfortable/confident with the software.

The Adobe site should have pricing from version 2 (previous version).

Please try it first...should answer much of your questions.

They have a student version for $99. Its is well worth the price. for noise reduction it cant be beat. Version 3 is coming out next week. Wait for that.

It does most of what you will need to do for photographs. Photoshop does a lot more, but you don't need to use it. I occasionally have to use Photoshop to put some "finishing touches" on photos, but I could get by with just using Lightroom.
