My 5D MKII HD video 24fps

Thanks, would like to see a pic of the rig.

Ignore the traffic nazis. I didn't see anything dangerous in the video. Road looked dry and fine. Drive it like you stole it ;)

Manual mode. ISO 400 I believe. Aperture 11 as I remember.

But the exposure is a bit over I should have closed the aperture more. Next Time.
I think you should also turn on highlight protection mode too, that sort of video really seems to need it, with intense clouds mixed with much darker shadow areas you need every bit of help rolling off the top end, that plus 1/3-2/3 stop darker might just be enough to save the clouds enough to look ok

And you could always go ISO200 f/18-20, diffraction doesn't really come into play much with DSLR video and it's not like there is any need to preserve low DOF there I don't think. ISO200 might give you another 1/3 stop dynamic range over so over ISO400 if I recall correctly (which I may not).

I'm surprised the video is so super-smooth, you must've rigged that tripod into the cushions in a very nice way indeed.

The wide angle emphasize the impression of speed.

I did 210 Km/h (130 mph) twice as top speed only when the road was "clear" (no oncoming traffic or car in front of me). The road was dry.

When the "time window" for overtaking is short you have to be close to the vehicle in front of you. As long as your breaking & accelerating power is more than the vehicle in front of you, it's ok to me.

The speed was indeed over the limit allowed but considering all those factors the only person endangered was me and, believe me, I'm no candidate for death wishes.

You can't, honestly, put my driving in the same bag as this guy for example :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WlmaKe6Inyk

299 Km/h = 185 Mph !!

The one who have never exceeded the speed limit can point his finger at me, for the others you can cut the lecture !

This is a photo forum and we have diverted from the main subject.
The video has been removed from YouTube considering the "buzz" generated.
I will post picture of my rig as many of you have asked for it.
Sorry for my english, as some of you may have guessed, I'm from Europe.

Glubok.
that motorcycle guy is nuts, not good at all, how the hell can anyone notice him weaving through heavy traffic at 95mph, someone grabs a fry and drifts over a foot or two or changes lanes.... and at 185mph if he loses it he could easily flip all the way over the barriers and into oncoming traffic and through a windshield the highway wasn't always separated enough

you didn't look so bad as that, although you do need to watch for the tired person in a rush pulling out and expecting approaching traffic at 45mph and someone instead approaching at 90mph, even if they maybe didn't pull out properly, it doesn't really matter to either of you in the end or a darting squirrel right as you pass an oncoming and at 100mph it knocks you into other lane or something, anyway it was hard to really judge what was going on from the video though with the wide angle and all

Please put your video back, does it matter what these people think of it?

I am really curious to see it, and also your set up!

Probably 24fps too. Had it been 30fps the smoother frame rate would reduce speeding effect. Also jittery effect because of video conversion and CMOS sensor could lend itself to greater speed.
I think the wide angle lens overemphasizes the sense of speed of passing by cars.

There are many videos like this with fisheye lenses, gives a nice effect especially at night.
reknown for speed? Welll, if he was driving on german roads there is a speed limit of 100 Km/h on non-autobahn roads. Sorry but the way he drives and overtakes is just plain irresponsible and would be considered general neglience driving in GErmany. I ll watch this vid agian. If it is a german road I am gonna report it. I have seen too many people die because of drivers like him. A teacher and his daughter from my school died when some guy "testing" his sports car crashed into the side of their car.
Is he nicked then?

You have to prove the other cars are not simply slow and there is no overtaking allowed, the sort of highway code and driving customs that are allowed in that part of the country, etc.

Here are some pics of my rig I did this afternoon.

I actually secured it with a little rope fixed to seatbelt buckles.

I had to use all the flexibility of my Manfrotto tripod.

Enjoy.

oops man i was wayy too tired last night, obviously what i said about the f-stops vs. iso was utterly wrong and ridiculous! I should've said maybe ISO200 and f/9-f/10 would be ok.

I felt after viewing this post that that I had to respond. I was fortunate enough to see your original post and viewed the footage with both a critical eye towards the technical and an even more intense gaze to the subject matter and found it joyously emotional. I confess at this point that I have a deep running passion for all things automotive and the combining of this with my love of photography exponentially increased my joy viewing your footage. Years ago, I was very fortunate enough to live in Germany and traveled throughout Europe and developed a particular love of southern France and recognized many of the roads you traveled upon. Seeing and hearing your Porsche footage was for me simply glorious!

With that said, I understand why there are those amongst the human species who belittle the footage on the grounds of safety concerns and what not, but I honestly did not see anything to point at that was blatantly out of bounds with regards to negotiated reason. Given the necessary skills and a intimate feel for the vehicle and it's limits I cannot find fault unless I were to apply the interpretation of mind that exists in a true black and white world of right versus wrong. Lastly, I must say that every day I drive the vast majority of drivers are exceeding the speed limit (copiously!), wandering lane to lane while multitasking amongst electronics, and other such lunacies and I can honestly say that your footage was far less dramatic than what I see daily.

Lastly, the primary subject matter of this realm of flowing electrons is the capture of life in still and moving images. Your footage captured - at least for me - a sublime clock tick in time and place that has every right to be posted here and enjoyed and discussed for what it is. It has every right to be posted herein and I honestly feel removing it was a mistake. I sincerely hope you place it back for others to relish.

I never tried this, but could a trail effect be archieved of the trafic and city lights, if the movie is shot at night with very slow shutter speeds?
It could be amazing, especially if the movie is viewed faster than normal speed.

that might be cool, i wonder how it would work out, obviously the settings would be a lot faster than a still shot like that on a tripod, otoh, you'd be moving

i think he may be afraid because some people wrote on it that they were sending the link to traffic cops for a speeding ticket

That's is the point exactly !

I'm in love with photography and more generaly with the potential aesthetic of everything.

I won't take the risk to be given up for 8min of footage.

There is a strict road policy in France and my driving licence is too useful for my passions. Too risky.

I guess that is the result of "global censorship" mixed with a touch of jealousy.

Thank you for your kind words about my work, I appreciate.

I will, if you want post an URL where those-who-are-interested will be able to download the wmv file.

Just edit out all the bits that can identify you, email the clip to me and Ill post it on Youtube.

Those who come up here (a photography forum) to lecture us about road safety with their "holier than thou" attitude can kiss my behind..

Not if the tripod itself is vibrating/shaking.

Hmm, that was surprisingly steady for just being wedged behind the seats. Unfortunately the firewall is directly behind my seats, so no dice on that set up. Thanks for posting though.
