Just as I was leaving the house, who comes walking up to the door but Mr. UPS. I was surprised: only ordered it yesterday. Must be a softbox, I thought. Nope. "Looks like a camera," said the astute UPS guy.
And there it was.
So, I shot a few photos, just to check the color on it.

Everyone here will, no doubt, have have better compositions, simply because I don't have time right now to shoot.
For all that, a few things stood out -- and made me say, "WOW!" VERY LOUDLY.

1. The autofocus is nearly instantaneous. I also own a 707, by the way. A platoon of turtles could have passed through the scene with the 707 before it snapped the photo. Not now. I let my dog run free and shot her moving through the grass. I pushed the shutter, it took the shot. MAN, is that thing fast! (The dog is well-focused, too!)

2. The color red, at least on my 717, looks red. Please keep in mind I constantly wondered why my 707 pushed the red spectrum to red-orange. The 717 does reds very well. I'm pleased. I have NO IDEA if it oversaturates, but it didn't look that way to me. However, I only pulled out a fire engine red double breasted sweater with texture on it, and shot it at a 90 degree angle to the sun. I can easily see all the texture. If it oversaturates, one of you will find out before I do. Sure dun' look that way to me, Lucy.

3. Greens are much nicer. In fact, now that I think about it, the whole color spectrum looks

'toned down' a bit. Nothing jumps out at me -- YET. I've only shot with it for 20 minutes, guys (and ladies). Dun' go by me!

4. That focusing-by-turning-the-barrel feature is NICE, NICE, NICE. Hands never have to leave the barrel to zoom in or out. And it's smooooooth. No zippy, erratic speed demon here.

Now, for the one thing I noticed indoors: when I shot the red cherry living room furniture, I STILL saw some "red" in the colors that's not there naturally. It's less than the 707, but it's there.

Just thought you guys (and gals) might like to know.

OH, OH, OH, before I forget! The noise reduction features kicks in at 1/25 second. I read conflicting reports as to what shutter speeds were low enough to activate the noise reduction feature. I set the shutter at 1/25 and aperture at 3.2 in my living room and I saw the letters "nr" next to the shutter speed. What's interesting is that the shot looks cleaner.
Just a second: I'll do it again right now.

Ayuh. Noise reduction clicked on at 1/25. I even manually adjusted to 1/3 (using the manual mode). It disappeared. Ayuh, looks like a winner, ma.

Oh GEEZ!!! I really hafta go NOW. The D60 JUST THIS SECOND ARRIVED as I was typing the world "ma" in the previous line. I only ordered these darn things YESTERDAY!!!

I said a little prayer and this is what I got...?!?!

Are you SURE that the "NR" symbol isn't kicking in at 2.5 seconds? That it's displaying 1/25s instead?

I enjoyed reading your story...

I have a question. Why did you get a D60 and F717? I would think that if you need a small backup camera that, as a D60 owner, you would just wait a little longer and get the G3.

Congratulations.

David Clark

I saw a post here that they had it. I called and the salesman said, "Yeah We got it. You want to buy it?" I said, "Yes, sir. Please, sir."

Or, to put it as Lauren Bacall once did, after her first kiss from Humphrey Bogart: "I like that. I'd like more."

I SAID 1/25 second, son.... :-)

I can still count. Just 'cuz my eyesight's gone and my teeth are fallin' out don't mean I can't buy glasses and choppers to compensate.

Once again: I'm dialing it THIS VERY SECOND, Ulysses. Just for you! Oh, oh, what does it say???

1/40, 1/30, 1/25 OOOOOH, LOOK, THERE'S THE NR ICON!!!!!!

.....let's keep dialing.....1/20,1/15, 1/13, 1/10, 1/8,1/6,1/5,1/4,1/3, 2.5, 2, 1.6, 1.3, 1" (I think that means we're now at 1 second, but my glasses ain't on right now), 1.3", 1.6", 2", 2.5"

Hmmmm....I'd have to say....NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! 1/25 second.
See the things I do for you, Ulysses??? Just to keep the faith.

It said, "We don't appreciate language like that. Sorry."

The strongest word in the story was "darn."

I have a friend who's a photographer, who FINALLY got excited about getting a DSLR. He was excited about the D60. I saw a post in Canon SLR forum that had been posted all of 15 minutes before I signed on. I called the store with one phone, called my friend with the other phone. The salesman picked up the line first!). I asked my buddy did he want it? He picked that moment to go all vascillating and said, well, I think.....By that point, I figured he'd say yes, (he did eventually) and I said to the salesman, who's holding on the phone in my left hand,"Yes, I'll take it." So, I bought it,called my friend and THEN he decided he wanted it. So, I said, good, I'll sell you this one. To which HE replied, "But you don't take Mastercharge!" So, I said, "No, I sure don't." To which he replied, "I'd better call them and buy one for myself."
And that's how I got a D60.

Now, before anyone gets horrified, I had been #1 on CDW's list for 4 months. It was only by the slightest stroke of chance that I ordered both of these on Monday, and they arrived today. I'm still somewhat ....stunned, but hey, I planned to get the 717 because 1) I liked the 707, and 2) I wanted a backup with a hot shoe on it for my portrait work, and 3) I always thought my 707 wasn't functioning correctly anyway, and I wanted to be sure!
So, now I have two cameras and $3,600 less than I had yesterday morning.

If push came to shove, seriously, just how much trouble do you think I'd have selling either of them on eBay?? I'd take a slight loss so that somebody else could get a bargain if I decided to sell. That would make me happy (I did the same thing when I sold my audio equipment: it made it more fun to see somebody else light up knowing they'd gotten a really good deal [my momma raised me that way and I likes it!]--- and somebody else, too! For now: THEY IS MINE, AND DON'T COME NEAR ME!!!!

As for the Canon G3 (which I'd not heard about), who says I'm done buying equipment???? That's what neices and nephews are for! Friends too, for THAT matter!!!

P.S. How bizarre. When I tried to post, I got a message saying, "Sorry. We don't appreciate that kind of language." It was a site warning message. The heading was, "Well, Story, Part II."

It's that damn Mercury Retrograde we're in. It always makes the stock market crash, computers act up, mail get lost, miscommunications like crazy and people misunderstand each other. Thank God, it'll be gone by next Monday.

I'm thinking it'd be fun to be your neice, nephew, or friend. :)

...LOL...so would they, if they were photographer types. But they're of the "it's-just-a-picture" mentality, so it's unlikely I'll have to shell out more bucks for another one unless one of my friends sweetly says, "I'd LOVE to have a nice digital camera for my birthday, Glen."

Hi

You are definitely a very good writer(To be honest I could visualize the situation)…Congrats on both the purchases. Have fun and do post some samples soon.
Take care.

I'm going to ask you to do ONE MORE THING for me, Doc. ;-)

I want you to do exactly the same experiment you did, AND take a pitcha of your F717 LCD. You can use your D60 if you want. :-)

Or if you want to get REALLY adventurous, shoot a MOVIE of it... oh , wait... the D60 don't do movies.

Bahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah!!©

Seriously, we're all excited for you and the other soon-to-arrive folks who will be reporting on their cameras' arrival. Glad for you all!

Hi Glen,

It's me, your long lost cousin from CA. I know it's been a while but I was totally surprised to see you on this forum! Thought I'd say hi! Aunt Mabel says hi too and wonders if you still like to eat pudding with your fingers!

I've been thinking a family reunion would be fun...whatcha say?

Steve

PS: A D30, D60 or 717 would be nice!

hahahahahaha

and yet it seems I got it before others who were on a waiting list.

I'm more about the photograph than the equipment, but, coming from film, I've just found it easier to get a really great camera and forget about the equipment after that.

As for the D60, I haven't even taken it out of the box yet. As I said, it's just equipment. I'll get around to it by Saturday or Sunday.

I just posted because, frankly, I was most excited about the shutter lag time, which is genuinely great. Remember though, I just got into digital in 2001, so for all I know, it's not that great. But I shot pics of my dog, and she dun' sit steel for nuttin' Lucy. She'd turn her head this way and that, even when I'd make high-pitched sounds that would have the men in white jackets running after me to put me in one if they heard the kinds of sounds I was making to get her attention.

When I DID get it, I snapped the photo immediately. THIS TIME, I put is on a tripod. And that camera got the shots before she turned her head away! You press the shutter, and it seems to go CLICK!! immediately -- and that was on evaluative metering, not spot. That's pretty fast response time. I'm not technical as are so many others, but it's pretty damn fast, in my experience! And the colors are even, too, not something that could ge said for my 707, which is positively GLARING at the 717 pretender across the table from it. I even took the battery from the 707 and put it into the 717. I'm trying to be sensitive to the 707's feelings; it must feel abandoned. But no fear! Now I have TWO Sonys. And a Canon D60, EOS 3, Elan 7E, Kiev 60 and Mamiya 645. I think I've got my bases covered for the next 5 years just in case I don't buy the Canon D1s any time soon (and I won't).

Are you planning on gettng a 717 or no? I think the hotshoe is a great feature, a propos of nothing.

Thanks for the compliment, too!

Learning html is beyong the brain I was given, even though the left and right half are exactly equal (that accounts for my unusual character). I'm trying to catch up with all you guys learning Photoshop as it is! I thought I'd be a film photographer for at least 10 more years, but it seems the time warp that enveloped me has other ideas....

(Evil laugh)

I COULD send them to Ulysses. HE seems competent and well-liked here. He could no doubt doctor them and post them and you'd all be sure of having well-doctored pics to pore over!
How 'bout it, U? Want a non-paying job?

Is there any chance you could do a quick test for LEVBFS (any manual shots with flash and underexposure for ambient light)? I'm really curious to know if the white balance with flash problem still lingers in the 717.

Thanks

Jason

Where you been? We been scoping around for the 411 on you. Last we heard, you was with some phat sisters!

I'm down with aunt Mabel. Tell her I never used my fingers; those were plastic GI Joes I whittled down to LOOK like fingers.....

Family reunion was in Virginia in 1999. I guess your side of the family is fakin' the scene (translation: You all were avoiding us all and we all were ticked off!). So, I don't think so, brother. But hey, you're cool with me, anyway. You still got blonde hair? Mom said we never told anyone half the family was white: it was too embarrassing! So, we fronted that you all were actually Black but were just 'high yellow' and all.....
Good to hear from you....
