Just as I was leaving the house, who comes walking up to the door but Mr. UPS. I was surprised: only ordered it yesterday. Must be a softbox, I thought. Nope. "Looks like a camera," said the astute UPS guy.
And there it was.
So, I shot a few photos, just to check the color on it.
Everyone here will, no doubt, have have better compositions, simply because I don't have time right now to shoot.
For all that, a few things stood out -- and made me say, "WOW!" VERY LOUDLY.
1. The autofocus is nearly instantaneous. I also own a 707, by the way. A platoon of turtles could have passed through the scene with the 707 before it snapped the photo. Not now. I let my dog run free and shot her moving through the grass. I pushed the shutter, it took the shot. MAN, is that thing fast! (The dog is well-focused, too!)
2. The color red, at least on my 717, looks red. Please keep in mind I constantly wondered why my 707 pushed the red spectrum to red-orange. The 717 does reds very well. I'm pleased. I have NO IDEA if it oversaturates, but it didn't look that way to me. However, I only pulled out a fire engine red double breasted sweater with texture on it, and shot it at a 90 degree angle to the sun. I can easily see all the texture. If it oversaturates, one of you will find out before I do. Sure dun' look that way to me, Lucy.
3. Greens are much nicer. In fact, now that I think about it, the whole color spectrum looks
'toned down' a bit. Nothing jumps out at me -- YET. I've only shot with it for 20 minutes, guys (and ladies). Dun' go by me!
4. That focusing-by-turning-the-barrel feature is NICE, NICE, NICE. Hands never have to leave the barrel to zoom in or out. And it's smooooooth. No zippy, erratic speed demon here.
Now, for the one thing I noticed indoors: when I shot the red cherry living room furniture, I STILL saw some "red" in the colors that's not there naturally. It's less than the 707, but it's there.
Just thought you guys (and gals) might like to know.
OH, OH, OH, before I forget! The noise reduction features kicks in at 1/25 second. I read conflicting reports as to what shutter speeds were low enough to activate the noise reduction feature. I set the shutter at 1/25 and aperture at 3.2 in my living room and I saw the letters "nr" next to the shutter speed. What's interesting is that the shot looks cleaner.
Just a second: I'll do it again right now.
Ayuh. Noise reduction clicked on at 1/25. I even manually adjusted to 1/3 (using the manual mode). It disappeared. Ayuh, looks like a winner, ma.
Oh GEEZ!!! I really hafta go NOW. The D60 JUST THIS SECOND ARRIVED as I was typing the world "ma" in the previous line. I only ordered these darn things YESTERDAY!!!
I said a little prayer and this is what I got...?!?!
And there it was.
