You are under no obligation to tell a cop anything. When a cop is just asking you questions, not detaining or arresting you, it is known as a consensual encounter. That means you can withdraw your consent for the encounter and disengage at any time. You don't have to answer a single question, nor should you!

And when you are being detained or arrested, you have the legal right to remain silent. The only thing you should say is "I want my attorney."

In some states you have to identify yourself to an officer if asked. But that's it.

If I got a phone call from a cop about shooting photos I would say "I was in the area because I'm a photographer and I find the area interesting. That's all I have to say. Have a nice day." I would then hang up.

It's that simple.

Never, never, never, never, NEVER talk to cops!!!

It's a real thrill to see those Congressman railing against the costs, while they stand there with $500 haircuts and $3500 suits and winter-time tans. Does anyone at all believe those are paid for out of their Congressional salaries? Actually, that goes to both sides of the aisle, Democrat as well as Republican.

Yes if someone reports suspicious behavior, they should follow up and check, but once it was established that you took photos that should be it. End of story.

It's the perfect example how the word 'security' is abused and a blanket excuse to intimidate people, control people and give the police/government more power over the people. And this also shows how this does absolutely nothing to make us any safer at all!
