Tried a new type of portrait shot

Hi there,

A very novel way of shooting portraits...Liked them all. How did you acheive this? Would be great if you could also share the process and the workflow [if any post processing done].

Since I'm a big fan of "figuring it out", I'll post up my technique, but I'll wait a bit and see who figures it out...should be pretty easy to guess.

I like these quite a bit. However, in the first photo the light/flare on the left side of the subject's face is distracting. All in all, they are well done and certainly creative.

I picked up a little bit of see through fabric and simply hung it on my backdrop stand. Then in order to get the light to do the somewhat ghosting effect I shot an SB-900 through an umbrella and made sure that it bounced off of the fabric just a little bit. That's when the light would catch the material and light it up just a little. Doing this seemed to amplify my flash. Some of the shots were taken with the flash at the very lowest power setting and still coming out hot so I'd drop the aperture to reduce the light that made it through.
Here is my guess. ISO maxed out with low available light?

I guessed wrong then. Don't you love digital? So easy to experiment and do things you would not try with film and developing costs.

Although I applaud the effort and risk of experimentation, I can't say that I like any of them. The first two look more like soft images the effects of lens flare. The last one looks more interesting, however, looks soft or OOF. Keep experimenting but be critical of the results.

In the spirit of Occam’s Razor one should embrace the less complicated formulation or simply put, less is more.
