7D vs 5D mk II in Studio Fashion & Portrait Photography

I tried 3 copies of the Sigma 35mm f/1.4 a few years ago when it first came out. The pix quality was inconsistent in all 3. I ended up returning it even though the lens itself looks very nice. It's a shame that Sigma can't improve on the optic quality of its many lenses. The 105mm f/2.8 macro was the only one I'm impressed with so far.

I tried to like the 7D, it would have saved me a lot of money, but I finally went with the 5DII. I see a noticeable difference in IQ. When making fine edits to the file, the 7D had a gritty look I can't explain, but don't like. The 5DII images, even at 100% has tighter, more solid edges and contours that remind me of fine grain MF film.

Download sample RAW files from Image Resources, you'll see what I mean.

Even if I'm the only one that sees the difference, that's good enough for me...I'm the one who looks at my images every day! :)

The problem is, even if you think you can see the differences, you’re still the only one who will look at them at 100%. The rest of people who view your images will see prints or monitor-sized images. You are wasting money and giving up a lot of goodies from the better body chasing that pretty useless 100%.

Like Jose B? I've seen a lot of nice 7D portraiures from him. He seems to like the camera very much. What I really see funny is from those newbies’ “one day I want to own a full frame too” without really understand what they’re getting from it.
I love how these crop camera users think 7D has anything on 5DII. This is a very easy decision. Portrait plus Landscape=5D11 period. Why complicate things. You should always listen to people who have experience with both cameras in question.

I don't "think" I can see a difference, I do. On prints up-rezed to 20x30 the difference is clear and the 5DII files need much less touch up work when enlarged. Your standards may be different so you're free to buy the cheaper option. But for my large art prints I couldn't go for lesser IQ. If I could afford the D3x and new lenses I would probably like that even better (if it had 1080p video).

Most users here who have both cameras also concur--for the best IQ the 5DII gets the nod. That doesn't mean the 7D is a bad camera.

Cheers.

Yeah, you print A1/A2 and look at them at a distance of 1'-2' to see the difference. That's what pixel peep gets into you.

Don't insult people who buy a "cheaper" camera. I happen to think I buy the "better" camera regardless of cost. I could have bought 5D or 5DII long ago if I wanted to. I might hesate a bit if it's at D3s or 1Ds3/4 price range though.

You’re right. I have 85L II which is one reason I have no interest in 5DII.
5D mkII + 135L costs as much as 7D + 85mm f1.2. Both are killer combos. Your choice.

Carlk,

You and your crop camera. Just keep hope alive. One of these days you will be able to afford a FF camera. Until then keep on preaching.

Yes, and so do customers. Landscapes, large portraits, framed art prints and fashion shots are viewed very closely. Good for you if you don't have to worry about such scrutiny.

If FF IQ is lost on you, you shouldn't be so proud of it.

Canon has done their job in segmenting so we need both...

Be Nice!!

I was going to upgrade to 5D mark ii but I was soooo happy with my croppy 7D that I got another crop :)!!!

What a moronic comment that is. A little sad that it exactly reflects the attitude of some of the 5D owners. You don’t care what your camera can do or not but just want to defend the status of your “higher level” camera because you have spend a few more dollars for it. I’m sure you’re pretty p’d that the “cheaper” 7D that can do much more but that’s just too bad.

I’m actually an IQ fanatic but I don’t look for that elusive IQ only exists in your imagination. Good pictures come from any cameras. I don’t need to have some particular camera just to convince me my pictures are good. I don’t need to pay $300 bottle of wine to tell me I got a good wine. I know a good wine when I drink one. Come back to photography do you mind to show me some of your 5DII pictures that will make me say “One could never get this without it I need this camera”? From my past experiences I will not see one this time. Not from the 5D fanboy like MAC either. Now you know where I’m coming from.

Exactly, pick the tool that does what you need. For studio fashion and Portraits I would (and did) pick the 5DII. You wouldn't, fair enough.

Sal

Sigh. I guess no high IQ samples again.
Not to a newbie who already says they can see no difference.

Save up and you can find out for yourself.

Sal

Yeah you bought the 7D just today. Welcome to the club. You'll find out how much pleasure there is to use a body like that.
Like you would know the difference. And for your information I own both 5DII and 7D.

Ok. but there are many experienced photographers here. Why not show them what you can do with 5DII that no one could do without it. Thinking about the respects you 5DII owners will be getting.

See what I told you? You people really believe you know IQ because you have more money to spend?
