Hi

I'm planning to buy a multi-purpose lens for my 500d toreplace my EF 18-55II. I saw two alternatives made by Sigma that seem to be very interesting: the Sigma AF 17-70mm f/2.8-4.5 DC macro and the Sigma AF 18-50mm f/2.8 EX DC Aspherical IF. Which one do you recommend me? Thank you

If the 17-55 f2.8 Canon is not in the picture and you're only looking at Sigma, I'd say to wait until the new Stabilized version of the 18-50 f2.8 hits the shelves and compare to the other two prior to making your final choice.

But the two lens I've mentioned are at a very good price at a shop near my town... I wanted a opinion about this two, if possible...

Hi Bruno,

I own the Sigma 18-50mm ff2.8 EX DC Macro (very pleased) and have seen enough of the Sigma 17-70mm lens to know that I wouldn't consider giving up the constant f2.8 for the extra 20mm on the long end and the 1mm on the short end. Foot zoom and/or cropping easily compensates almost all the time.

On a review of the 18-50 they said that Chromatic Aberrations with this lens is a problem. Is it?

I haven't noticed any particular problem with this lens although I don't use it outdoors too often. Much better in this area than my Canon 17-85mm where CA & PF can be a real PITA.

My Canon 100/2.0 PF looks worse than my sigma 18-50/2.8 I would look more at the 2.8, the constant exposure is much better, also more versatile as a indoor/outdoor option. Borders for this lens seem soft, even when stopping down.

I had the old 17-70 (currently have the new image stabilized version). The 17-70 is an excellent choice - very good image quality at a low price.

I haven't used the Sigma 18-50, but have seen good reviews of it.

Think about the tradeoffs involved - the 17-70 gives you some extra range, but you give up some low light capability.

Also, if you have $450, the new 17-70 with image stabilization is also a great lens with the bonus of image stabilization (important towards the telephoto end) and an f:2.8 to f:4 range instead of f:2.8 to f:4.5

Scott, any clues about the possible release date for the OS version of the 18-50?

I am looking to buy my 1st DSLR, and I'm still trying to figure out with which lens I will go (not sure about the 18-55 Canon offers) and I was thinking of Sigma's 17-70 or 18-50 just like Bruno does.

P.S.: I didn't mean to hijack this thread, but I'm mainly asking myself the same questions Bruno posted.

I checked with my local retailer, apparently the lens will be available around June (at least in Canada, maybe a little earlier in the US). I thought everyoen who will read this post and have an interest into that lens coudl use that information
