Hi Folks:

Just when I had saved enough to buy the Sigma, Sigma told me it has none of these Pentax-mount lenses for sale anywhere. I have read reviews of the 150mm, however, there seem to be some disturbing problems with it plus it's reach isn't what I was looking for. What would you go to for long macro shots?

Thanks in advance.

I do love the 105, which I bought some years ago, but was hoping for something with a longer reach. I'm really ticked about this!

Hi Judith,

Probably not much help, but I noticed that the 180 Macro was disappearing from the big dealers over a month ago. I figured that Sigma might be discontinuing the model as it was (probably will convert it to HSM/OS, or just drop it in favor of the 150), so I started looking seriously for one, and was lucky enough to find an open-box one at Adorama. Although this was not a primary LBA target of mine, I immediately bought it, and am now glad I did. The lens was perfect, except for a small broken piece in the rear lens cap. I paid well under $700 USD.

Considering the way things usually go with premium K mount lenses, demand usually goes up when the word gets out that a lens is discontinued, so prices go up for used examples, as they have on the PF Marketplace -- the last examples I've seen there were being offered at close to $1K. I think that used lens dealers are the last to follow the trend, so I'd look at the used sections at B&H, Adorama, and of course, KEH. They would tend to mark down the used asking price from their last new selling price as opposed to pricing them according to the private market -- but they do catch up eventually. Lenses like this go very quickly, so you have to check often, and late at night and very early morning are times of the day that I have found most of the hard-to-find lenses. Have the funds readily available, and if you find one that seems to be acceptable, don't hesitate -- all three of these dealers have very good return policies, and the only thing you're really risking is shipping both ways -- a small price compared to the the cost (and value) of the lens and the added risk of buying from an unknown private seller.

Another possibility is to search the websites of really obscure online dealers. I've found quite a few deals from tiny dealers nobody ever heard of. A good example a few years ago is my first F 1.7x AFA, which I got for $75 from a small dealer in MN when the going market price was $175-200. Most of these dealers probably sell more C and N gear in a week than K mount stuff in a year, so the Pentax gear for them is an afterthought, and they don't bother to keep up with the market. You might be able to take advantage of this.

IMO, it's a lens that's worth doing some work to find if you have a use for it. I'm more than pleased with mine. Scouring the used (or even the overseas) dealer market for one will probably be worth it since a new HSM model will undoubtedly be more expensive (if it appears), and Sigma hasn't deemed the K mount worthy of their 150 Macro (I'm just being snarky -- the market for such a specialty lens in K mount is probably not large enough to justify Sigma making them, and with the world economy what it is, business is business)

Thank you so much, Scott for all the information. I have spent quite a bit of time on the internet and phone checking out a number of resources - all to no avail to this point, but I will follow up more aggressively on your suggestions.

Just a quick jump-in here to point to these two possibilities for you.

From the bottom of my heart, Ron, thank you. I have made a pot of coffee and will be on this all night.

My very best regards to you and I hope that you are feeling better.

....track down a mint Tamron 90mm model 52B Adaptall 2 lens. If it's come from one careful owner, it should be accompanied by a matched Tamron 2X TC which turns the lens into a 180mm 1:1 macro. Don't be put off by the fact that you use a TC - the combination works very well in this case.

It's manual focus, but I don't think AF is terribly helpful for macro shots anyway.

It's an excellent lens and without the TC also doubles up very nicely as a 90mm f2.5 portrait lens. Compact too. Only at pixel-peeping levels are you (possibly) going to notice any difference from the newer lenses; this one is a true classic and you will have an awful lot left over to spend on other lenses!

By the way - even better if you can find one on sale that includes the Tamron PK-A adapter. Bundles including the adapter, lens and converter always work out better value than buying them separately.

Thanks, Jon. Yes, manual focus for macro work is generally what works best for my style at any rate and I will look into your excellent suggestion. The earlier one made by Ron - to buy the Sigma 180 Samsung mount (manual focus only) - is also a possibiity.

I was up half the night searching for the lens and came across one, however, that store doesn't ship outside the U.K. Friday was spent making phone calls to the U.S. and beyond.

The thrill of the hunt is beginning to wear off!!

If you buy a Pentax 1.7 adapter and a Sigma 105mm EX DG Macro lens, you will have a pretty good 180mm macro lens f 4.6). I will be experimenting with mine in the next couple of days but it will be much closer to 180mm (178.2mm) almost any other available lens combo right now. I will let you know how it does! I am pretty confident it can do a sharp job after my tests on the DA* 200mm lens! Here is an example at f11, ISO 320, 1/180th. 350mm, equivalent to 525mm in classic terms! Check out the label on the tomato. I am thinking it will be even sharper on the Sigma 105mm Macro lens. Anyway, I will put up some shots in the next couple of days so you can see for yourself!

Best regards
Leo

Hi Leo:

I will very much look forward to your photos with that combo. The Sigma 105mm lens is also one of my favourites and I use it quite a bit when I'm at my cottage. There are so many good ideas here that either I hadn't thought of or more likely, didn't know how to put together to get acceptable results. Finding that a longer reach is better for me now has driven this search, along with the fact that the 180mm is an excellent lens for most of my macro purposes.

Thank you for taking the time to suggest this.

Hope Spring returns sooner rather than later here!

Best regards,
Judith

Many thanks, bview. I am continually amazed at the stuff I don't know! My "bookmarking" capabilities are outstanding, though...

Hi Judith
Samsung mount (manual focus only) - is also a possibiity.
I don't think that there is a Samsung mount distinct from the Pentax mount. The Samsung DSLR are just identical to the Pentax cameras, with exception of some outer disign details and the lack of dng format on Samsung.

Cheers - Klaus

You're killin' me! To date, I have been unable to track one down, with the exception of one in Poland, asking more for the used lens than it's worth new.

I thought I had a lead on the Samsung mount, but that panned out. Haven't given up yet, but this is has gone from exciting to frustrating.

Try two things:

1. Watch eBay. Some time back I found a nice one this way. I later sold it when I found an FA* 200 F4 Macro on eBay. Sometimes sellers in Japan have lenses that aren't available in the U.S., and sometimes they show up on eBay. Also used ones.

2. Ask people (via this list or other lists) to check their local camera stores for you. I'll bet there are used copies, or maybe even new ones, in a few camera stores here or there. That's how I found my FA* 300 F4.5.

Good luck,

Joe

There is one for sale at the marketplace at the other forum right now. Kinda expensive, but if you really want it.....

nevermind. It is sold and it was not the DG version.
