Today saw a huge fire rip through an apartment complex 1 block from my house. The wind was gusting at 60kmp while the firefighters were trying to bring the blaze under control. Fortunately no one was injured

Thanks BA

I was quite lucky when I arrived on the scene...the fire dept was just in the process setting up. I also was quite lucky I posted them to the Calgary Herald and they were printed on second page. I was quite pleasantly suprised.

They inspected the structure today and no one was reported injured but I think a few people might have lost cherished pets. There was a room to room search this am. About 6-8 inches of water everywhere to put out the fire....the bldg will need to be pulled down because of loss of structural integrity.

These shots are amazing :-)
They look like they should be shown on TV in a news report.

I hope no one was hurt.

I too feel sorry the folks in the apts. Lots of young new buyers, reports say some without insurance on the contents and they have lost everything. :o((
Barb
Really sorry for the folks in the apartments.

Very striking photos.

Not often Calgary makes the news out East. ;o)) It was pretty big but the gusting wind at 60km/hr made it much worse.

I was lucky when I caught the pictures....the wind shifted and they moved people way back shortly after I got the shots.

Well done.

Saw the news report on CBC on this side of the country last night.

Great Pics

Glad to hear that everyone is safe. Maybe this will give a little more push to upping the building codes to no longer allow wood framed low rise apartments like that. Concrete may cost more but it is definitely a better fire barrier.

Its not often that Calgary is so brown at this time of year.

I shoot for our local fire department. amazing how the camera smells like smoke when I get home. that is some blaze.

I feel very sorry for the people who lost their homes in this tragic fire. This is the second major condo fire we've had here in the past couple of years... it's too bad Calgary's building codes haven't changed much since the 1800's...

You are right its pretty brown. We have had very little snow this winter and lots of suprisingly warm windy days. ....may be a summer drought coming up for us again.

I hope that this and the fire about 8 years ago will spur them on to review the codes again.

I have several friends who lost everything in the fire. You are right it is very sad. I did hear on the radio that if the bldg had been finished 1 year later the bldg code has changed and now requires sprinklers in the roof elements too. What I was suprised with as I watched it burn was that the fire had unimpeded access to the entire roof section of that one whole bldg.....no divisions whatsoever across that span.
