My girlfriend accidently deleted a movie file of our Canon G2. Is there any way to get the file back?

Maybe. There are several data recovery things around. One I know of was free up until July, called Digital Image Recovery or DIR for short.

I might have the free file here someplace, I used it a while back but I had overwritten the microdrive so much is was apparently hopeless.

Important thing that... DO NOT write to your CF or MD until you get the file recovered!!

Oh, I found the zip of it, let me know your e-mail address if you want it. Only a 576KB size.

Could you send it to me too? Thank you!.

Should be real simple to use, you can read the txt file about it or just run the program.

I don't know if it'll work in-camera, I neglected to ask about that and I hadn't used it that way. I had used a PCMCIA card reader.

Drat! I just missed this message or I could've gotten it out to both of you in one go.

Reason I'm not putting it at my web space is because of the (il)legality of that.
Hope no one else will want it! ;-)

I thought it had a readme.txt in there, it wasn't installed anymore since getting a new HD so I reinstalled it just now. Running it I see now there's only a simple Help menu and it does require the "media" to be seen as a drive, whether or not that means the Canon WIA driver or something needs to be installed as well if left in-camera I'm not sure about that. I just know it works straight from the PCMCIA card reader without a problem.

Received - I am using a card reader - no problem it works(!) Thank you!

There is a disclaimer within a read file with information, that this is a freeware and can be distributed without any limits : )

Dear Kafras and Bob,

I too would very much like to a copy of the freeware programme that you have been talking about. If at all possible, please send to the following address:

[email protected]

Many thanks.
Cheers,
Jamie

Hi ,

I have just downloaded the Digital Image Recovery freeware from Bob, but I couldn't recover my accidentaly deleted images. I just recover the protected ones. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Does anyone have tried it with Sony's MSAC-PC2 PC (Card adaptor for Memory Stick), or with the DSC-F707 Sony camera?.
By the way, what is CF or MD?
Thank you very much.
Gustavo.

What he means is Compact Flash (CF) or MicroDrive (MD) - for your case it would be Memory Stick.

I have never used this program, and I don't use the meory stick, but my understanding is that it should work for the memory stick. As I put on a previous post, the following link contains some info:
http://www.windowsusers.org/dir.html

This says that "It does require that you either run a memory card reader, or that your camera appear to the computer as a drive."
Sorry I can't help any more than this, but hopefully somebody can....

Could I please ask for a copy of the program?
Send it to: [email protected]

Thank you very, very much.
I somehow pushed the post button too soon, before I had entered my
reply...

Anyway, I was going to add that I too have a copy of the original
freeware zip file, although I have never used it...
I did find, however, an interesting article about this program in a
user group. Check out the following link:
