I have an Epson Stylus Photo 870 which gives reasonable prints from files from my Nikon D100.

However I am not getting the colours reproduced as vividly (reds and terracottas) as I would expect when compared to what I see on my monitor.

I can change the Colour Profile within the Epson Colour management dialogue box to one of many but, unfortunately, not to the sRGB Colour Space Profile - I keep getting a message that it is not a valid colour profile.

So I have been using the sRGB setting from within printer custom setting mode - but I am still not geting the vivid colours I would expect.

Can anyone advise which is the best Colour Profile to use and suggest why I cannot load the sRGB from the Epson list (Epson say it is not an Epson problem but a Microsoft problem beacuse the error message is in a Microsoft Colour Management System dialogue box.

Thanks in advance, Paul

Windows will not let you choose sRGB for the printer because it is not a printer profile: it is an editing/working space.

If you want to use the sRGB setting in the print driver, you can still do that if you have printing software that is ICC aware. Once you set the print driver to sRGB mode, the only requirement is that you convert your images to sRGB before printing them. That can be done in a number of ways. I believe the D100 has the capability to capture images in sRGB mode, so you could capture images in sRGB up front, and then just send them to the print driver with no color management (because they are already sRGB).

Another way is to capture the images in Adobe RGB mode on the D100 and then convert the image from Adobe to sRGB and then print. This is probably the better solution since it allows you to capture a larger color gamut in your images up front.

Yet another way is to set your "Printer ICC" or "Print Space" to sRGB in your photo printing software. Some printing apps allow the sRGB space to be used as a printer profile (unlike Windows) and will just give you a warning that you are using a non-printer profile.

Does this help?

I dont know that much about profiles for this printer, but you will never get true sRGB out of a printer. The gamut of RGB colour spaces are for additive colour, e.g. monitors. Printers use subtractive colour CMYK and their gamut is smaller. This is probably why you will never be able to get exactly the same as you see on your monitor, especially satuarted colours.

I dont know about the error, just the science. :)

You didn't mention which OS you are using but I had no trouble adding sRGB to my 870 in WinXP .... I didn't try to use it but I was able to set it as Default under Color Management without any error message. I use the Epson driver and do not use the WindowsXP driver.

Yes, It did help - I used Adobe RGB mode and then converted to sRGB before printing. Many thanks to you and the others who replied.
Paul.
