C-730 samples here...

Fringing seems comparable to my Uzi & not that bad compared to some other cameras. Still don't know how anyone can handhold an unstabilized 10x zoom above half the zoom range though....LOL

Thanks for the link, Jared. I'd agree with your evaluation :-(

I'm starting to believe now that this camera is for those who want the big zoom, and are willing to put up with a few image quality issues for that. I had hoped for a bit more, but to each his own (and it does still have more zoom than any other 3Mp camera).

I also noticed there seems to be a (still disabled!) link to c5050 pictures at http://home.impress.co.jp/magazine/digitalcamera/02_10/ . I think I'll be keeping my eyes on that website in the next few days

"UZ'

It is very easy to try. Turn the IS of your UZI off and try. It works just fine down to 1/100s. At 1/100 make 2-3 photos and one vill be sharp.

Actually, I have had expierience with the "IS" off & it's not as easy as one might think. At least for me anyway. I turned the "IS" off for some tripod, night shots then forgot about it the next day & took quite a few blurry pics at better speeds than 1/100th before I realized what was going on....Yet with "IS" on, I've had reasonable success down to 1/4 second & on a good night down to a 1/2

I'd wait for someone to review the camera before making snap judgements on what are traditionally less than stellar quality photos.

John,

There's a separate set of c730uz samples on the Olympus Japan website that show the same image quality issues, hence my 'I'm starting to believe' comment. I agree one should always wait for the review.

Corne,

I had C2100 and sold it for C700 because the camera size was my critical parameter. I have got almost the same tool. Upgrading from C700 to C730 is a nice but not very significant upgrade. I would get better camera software, better (smoother EVF) and Histogram. 1600 vs. 2048 not that significant unless the lens is better. I would prefer C740. That would be noticeable 2270 pixels vs. 1600 pixels, which means 40% gain in pixels and hopefully resolution.

I have used my camera for almost six month and do not feel the need for IS. In low light I duplicate the shot (when it is possible) and try holding the camera very solid. Once a while I have blurry images (when the exposition is below 1/25-1/50. But very often I have very good results down to ½ s by anchoring the camera (pushing against) of something solid. C700 is a very solid camera. I think the C730 will be better.

I also do not miss IS. I find that the use of a handheld tripod to provide a handle to the camera radically reduces the amount of wobble-blur. These are very cheap and the bendy leg versions fit in your pocket like a very fat pen. It seems to me that blurring occurs largely due to camera rotation as the shutter is depressed. Having a handle greatly reduces this.

Of course, I only use the tripod occasionally, as much of the time it it possible to get fast shutter speeds at 10x zoom. The need for stabilisation help is only for gloomy conditions or interior shots.

If I forget the mini tripod then I revert to holding the camera using a vice-like grip, which the heel of your hand on the base and fingers on the top (not the back or front of the camera). The camera can then be held very firmly with the left hand, reducing wobble when operating the shutter.

With these methods in hand I rarely get wobble blur.

I still don't understand why Olympus released the C-720. The C-720 is a great, GREAT camera, don't get me wrong, but for Oympus to take the zoom back AND lose the sound just didn't make sense. The added extra megapixel didn't impress me much.

I told my sister to buy the C-700. For her needs, it's the best deal. Since she can't get an UZI (unless I give/sell her mine), lol. I owned the C-700 very briefly but loved that little camera. I only traded it back in because I was able to get the UZI at COMPUSA for $399 which, at the time (April 2002) was about $100 cheaper than the C-700!

I don't think there is a lens quality issue. The purple fringing is due to the chips inability to deal with high contrast situations. Typically the smaller the chip size per megapixel the worse the fringing becomes. This camera has a more pixels per area than even the C-700.
I hope that the quality of lenses / camera will get better. Still
it should be near final quality.
