What do you guys think of these two images I took yesterday in Central Park? They were taken with the S2 in late day lighting. Any advice or criticisms definitely welcome. Thanks!

Nice pics Craig. The first one could be a little sharper. Maybe a little camera shake in the late afternoon lighting?

I really like the 2nd one.

What lens, ISO, etc.?

Thanks,

Teski

Thanks! I've been getting a lot of pictures that are just less than sharp, even with a flash. Could it be that my lens is not up to spec? I'm shooting with a Nikkor 28-200mm f/3.5-5.6D IF AF. I don't think camera shake was the cause though. I shot it at ISO 800 and a shutter of 1/128s.
I really like the 2nd one.

Thanks,

Nice pics, Craig. Regarding the 1st one, what is the aperture setting ? I prefer a shallower depth of field, so the sharpness of the 2 persons stood behind the main subject would have not distracted the artist.

I'm at work so unfortunately I don't have the original shot with the EXIF data with me. I will post that info later.

Same..

Second shot is quite nice, good colours and compisition.

The second and a bit blurred.. And the colours a bit dull. Good compisition though.

I don't mind he onlookers behind the artist, I think it all adds to the dynamics of the picture. What is more distracting for me is half a drawing. Please show me all of it or none of it, seeing half of it is like having an itch you can't reach. What I like is the ease and spontanaeity of the characters which is often so hard to capture when you have a big camera rig pointing at them. Do you have a knack of being unobtrusive or making people relax in front of the camera?

Well, I was shooting the picture in Central Park and it was a very nice day. There were a lot of people walking around. That being said, I knew he saw me there. I wasn't right on top of him because I was using a long lens, but he seemed completely used to the attention. He was quite a good artist and my picture taking was in no way going to distract him from the task at hand. In regards to being able to only see half the drawing, I agree, should show all or none. The colors being slightly dull was definitely due to the sun being at a low angle and being under a full canopy of trees. After all, I did have to shoot at ISO 800 to get a good exposure without hand shake. Thanks again for all the comments!

Hi Craig

When I got my s2, a practice (I am biginner) with a 28/200 3,5-5,6 and a 35/70 f 2,8.

I was in hollidays and I shoot same landscapes and buildings in the same situations, time, etc.

I got the 35-70.

I found two big differences, sharpness and real colors on the 35-70, most than in the 28-200.

In the same photo, the 35-70 was capable to distinguish the colour of the sand in the beach. Not the 28/200

This was my experience.

But, don't forget, I am a biginner.

Cheers

Hi

sad to say, but it is your lens which causes the unsharp photo. I had a Tamron 28-200 and it was a totalt dissapointment and I thought that Nikon would perform better but after having read some tests the lens is disspointing as well. Not better that Tamron, Sigma and such but more expensive as one magazine wrote. Get 2 lenses instead, the 18-35 is good when not using it wide-open and the 80-200 is just marvelous along with S2, regardless of aperture.

Your S2 deservs a better lens!

Regards
Johan

I'm not very experienced either and took this lens on the word of the salesman who sold me the camera. I had the 24-85mm AF-S lens in my hand but the price was prohibitive. Looks like i'm going to have to look toward Ebay to help fix the mistake. Thanks guys!
