that people buy snake oil?
It this a jab because I may not be as technically astute as some of you?

Now that some have been kind enough to point out the impossibility of what I thought may have happened, it does make sense. But not at the time.

Thank you to those who took time to explain, no matter how silly my initial reaction may have been. Thank you, too, to those who reminded me that it would be wise to check for any malware, etc.

It's nice when the replies are helpful rather than make one feel like a dork.

It's illegal to print pictures of currency, you will be getting a visit from the FBI.
I believe this is no longer true. Plus it's printed for in-home play only, enlarged or reduced in size, and printed on single sided on 20# bond. The images are clearly marked specimen or have some other markings or color variations to know they are fake.

Do you need to be technically astute to know that a screen cannot take your photo?

Sure at that the moment it might have given you a scare. But then you knew your camera was off.

Yet, you posted the whole experience afterwards, still reeling from the fact that somebody took your picture.

H and A keys on my keybord are popping up , I cannot help it.

I went to one site and a small video-looking window popped up instantly that stayed open long enough to read "snapshot." Just as fast as it opened it disappeared. I'm assuming it took a photo of me, without notice or warning.

Oooooohh, have you got some? It's really hard to find now-a-days.
I need some too. My snake is starting to squeak a lot.

Any response to that is utterly utterly unprintable on here! :D

Actually this is a situation where firewall and anti virus measures do not apply.

Adobe Flash can activate the web cam - this is one of the known vulnerabilities of Flash .

On my Mac, I'm using a 'click to flash' plugin, when I have to use Windoze at work, I use Firefox with the 'NoScript' plugin. Flash objects on the page just appear as inert blocks until I specifically authorize them to run or add them to the plugin's white list.

a screen grab, though I don't know why someone would be making a copy of your screen.
Maybe they were telling you they knew you were taking an image of currency.

It is not illegal if you follow these rules:

http://www.secretservice.gov/money_illustrations.shtml

Basically one sided images are OK, if the image of the money is 25% smaller or 50% larger than the actual currency.

Black and white one sided images are allowed at actual size.

By the way the source for image- that is the digital image (all copies of it) are supposed to be destroyed after final use.

Gail I do not want to scare you and I do not have any first hand knowledge of this but I know this, if there is any way to do it someone will find a way to do it.....that is remotely operate your webcam without your knowledge.

A simple piece of black tape sure is an easy way to know for certain it can't be done.

Also you really do need more than Vista's inbuilt firewall. I used ZoneAlarm for years and it has a free version that would work for you. Plus as others have said virus protection needs to be on all the time so it can check, emails etc as they come into your machine.

Cheers

Robert

Unless computer is already full of crap-wares its impossible for a website to take a picture without a consent.

I just watched a current affairs program 10 minutes ago showing the ability now for people to load a silent program on your mobile phone that turns your phone into

1. A listening device even when it is sitting on the table beside you.

2. Able to listen to both sides of all of your conversations.

3. Shows a map on their computer showing exactly where you are.

So as I said to Gail no matter how many times people tell you it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to take a photo of you using your webcam without your knowledge. You want to be certain, put a cloth or piece of black tape over the camera lens and rest easy. :)

Mobile phones have a dozen different operating systems. You can't load anything onto my Zine without tools from a MotoDev development system and a direct connection.
that turns your phone into

1. A listening device even when it is sitting on the table beside you.
You'd notice the battery depletion. How many "talk minutes" does your phone have? 80?
2. Able to listen to both sides of all of your conversations.
Again, that would involve an increased bandwidth channel, and would eat power. Basically, you're talking about continuous use of a G3 mode.

That's something that needs to be done from the infrastructure side.
3. Shows a map on their computer showing exactly where you are.
That is pure paranoid fantasy.

It is possible to get a rough idea of the location of a phone, if it's located somewhere where multiple cells can see it (a phone can only see one cell at a time, it has to be "handed off" from cell to cell by the infrastructure) but you need time of flight data coordinated between the cells. This is insanely expensive and only done in emergencies. And again, it has to be activated on the infrastructure side.
So as I said to Gail no matter how many times people tell you it is IMPOSSIBLE for someone to take a photo of you using your webcam without your knowledge. You want to be certain, put a cloth or piece of black tape over the camera lens and rest easy. :)
Any decent webcam has a sliding lens cover.

It's always good to have a bit of paranoia in today's tech environment. It's also good to ask questions of friends who might know more than you. "The only dumb question is the one you didn't ask" still applies.
Thank you.

While I was obviously duped, the recent story you mention was mulling around in the back of my mind. And, as someone else pointed out, there are stories of others ability to take over a computer remotely.

I've beefed up my virus protection and will install a better firewall.

Thanks Robert. I honestly did get spooked until getting responses to this post.

I use gmail, so have no email coming into my machine. I personally would never go back to using a computer-based email client.
