Im considering this as a backup to my Canon D30/60

There are times while on Vacation weekends, Im not to happy to carry the BIG DSLR. Would like to hear all pro's and con's.

Mike,

Compared to your D30/60, the CD400 pictures will look noisy except in the best lighting conditions. Shadow areas will be the worst. I know because I bought one several months ago and returned it for that reason.

I am surprised that you'd consider the CD400 because it is one of largest Sony digital cameras and you want to lighten your load. You, of course, wouldn't have to buy a memory stick and I suspect this is your main motivation to get the CD400?

There are other smaller cameras that I think would do as well or better for a backup camera, but the CD400, like the F707, is the best at reliable focus.

Thanks for the Info/advise. For some reason Im drawn to the cd type media, dont ask me why?
If the Images are not that sharp, that will be a major drawback.

Mike,

The images are sharp and will look good. They just won't be as nice as the D60, that’s all. :-) It is a good camera and I like the ergonomics of it a lot. It is a real work horse. I just wanted a little more from it because it would only have been my one camera. With the D60 you can satisfy your desire for all the "art" pictures you want and with the CD400 you can use it more as a documentation camera on the go.

I must be very easy to please... but I think the picture quality is very good! Apparently I am not alone in this, as both imaging-resource and Jeff Keller reviewed the cd400 and praised the picture quality. I have taken thousands of pictures with this work horse, and the size has not been a problem - I carried it around Stockholm, Sweden, took pictures constantly without being hindered. The CD format is great, and the only accessories I have acquired are two ND filters and one polarizer. 90% of the pictures are sharp, focused, have good color - and if not, there is always Photoshop Elements!

Check out the discussion forum on Sony CD cameras on http://www.imaging-resource.com where there is lots of information.
