Don't have the 50mm f/1.8 DT => Get one!!

It's a fine lens, despite it's maligned status, lack of metal mount, etc. It is pretty much stuck on my A200 (except when I'm out in the wild).

It does mean and moody too!

Excellent image :)

What setup did you use for lighting?
Mine was quite simple - manual exposure (spot metered on left hand side of face) then underexposed by 2 stops. Wireless F42 held in hand to left, 1/4 power for modelling.

Nice portrait.
Aside cute kid, your camera produces nice detail at ISO400.

50mm f/1.7 is good enough for me on A850.
I can post samples if needed.

Haha, I found 50mm 1.8 DT for $90 open box on Ebay. Took a slight chance, but seller was willing to absorb return shipping if something wrong. Box looks used but lens is new and includes all accessories and manual. Have I known that Sony will push rebate a month later I would have probably waited a month to get new for current $125 at pretty much all on-line stores here in US.

I love this lens, it feels like crap (by itself) but performs like a champion. Seems like there are really no pits with this lens, it performs great in pretty much every category, and as OP mentioned it does so very consistently. When mounted on A700 it actually feels awesome. I like the heft/width of the lens that does not come at the expense of weight. Also, may I note that focusing and metering with A700 are super duper precise and right on target. Something that Nikon almost never got right on their cameras/lenses (I am a Sony convert from Nikon system).
Haha i found a Minolta 50mm f/1.7 at a camera store for $20...and it will work on FF when I get one :)

It even works on my Minolta Maxxum 7 film body with no cropping!

I agree. The 50mm f1.8 SAM is a really terrific lens.

Mr. Kilpatrick over at photoclub Alpha mentioned a rumor of a 35 f2 and 85 f2 plastic Chinese SAM lenses that may be released this year. That would be awesome if it were to happen, especially if they are sweet as the 50mm.

If a plastic 35mm f2 prime comes out for less than $200 or so I am so getting one. APS-C primes are awesome ! Why pay more for FF coverage when a majority of people ain't going to go down that road ?

Nice and simple -I really should get a flash :)

I have the Minolta 50mm f/1.7 as well. At least my sample is not even close to the Sony 50mm f/1.8. Will go to ebay soon. :-)
