OT. American language

Very colourful ones.

I find that Canadians are more literal in their conversational language than the British... not so much "beating around the bush," though I've been immersed in it since birth, so it's hard to appreciate what might be confusing to others.

Funny or not...I'm a lithuanian...I'm fluent in lithuanian, russian, but can't understand computer or photography related terms in either lithuanian or russian....I'm rather to call DSRL camera a "mirrored camera" - that's how DSRL is called in Russia.....

I couldn't use a computer if OS are in lithuanian or russian - it would be strange terms for me.....

I don't know, if I would be able to translate Shutter or Aperture into different languages...."CF Card" in russian or lithuanian - would be a "CF Card"....

:) :) :)

I work with people from the U.K....have so for over 10 years. There's not that much difference. It doesn't take long to understand words like (American to British) flashlight for a torch, hood (on a car) for a bonnet, trunk (on a car) for a boot, gas (for a car) for petrol, color for colour and so forth. The last time I checked there's a website that will identify these key words. Within the U.K., there are many accents and dialects as there are in the U.S.A. Check the internet for more details. It's rare the I can't understand any of my British friends...first I didn't understand what they meant by "quid", and a few words like that, but that's nothing compared to trying to learn a complete new language like German, French, Italian, Greek, or Spanish etc.
I read again the OP, and I think that the problem here i rather how to translate colloquialisms in Euro English, which is the simplified English that people from the European continent use as a second language. In fact the problem exists towards colloquialisms in both British and American English.

They can't be avoided in daily life, but they'd better be avoided when writing, for the sake of a clear communication.
