Like every new product being first on the block is fraught with uncertainty and potential disappointment. How many first-generation items do you know that either are gone or have undergone significant ugrades, changes, and redesigns. The problems with noise in the darker areas, the fringing such on the buildings in the Japanese Ferris Wheel/Building nights shots with its horrible blues make me wonder if the first generation will be another example. The stunning detail, "snappy", realistic feel, and the superb large prints (which unfortunately most haven't seen) make me believe that this is indeed the chip of the future and that it may be worth jumping in early regardless of the short comings and the work that needs to be done. Of course, there is no need to jump in right away unless you are the impatient type. I keep looking at these prints!!!

Note: I thought I was replying to you and ended up post a new thread - what a fool I must be huh* HA!

Here's what I meant to say:

I saw where you were printing them out - the sushi, the peppers, etc - And I was at work and couldn't wait to get home to print them also.

And what an amazing print they made.

We have an Oly E-10 and the Sony 707 - both of which I love and think are really good cameras - and we print 11 x 17 and 13 x 19 prints all the time. We hang them in our living room - and change them quite a lot - as we take new shots. And we are used to printing these pics out on our Epson 1270.

But let me tell you -

These SD9 photos were something else... You really do need to print them to get the 'full' effect.

The prints did 2 things for me:

Showed me how much better the pictures can LOOK

and

Showed me how much better the printer can PRINT!

We have even sold some of the prints we make - so they have always looked nice.

But now - with these photos - my other prints looks so 'drab' and 'dull'. Well, not really. But they don't look as impressive.

Funny how new technology can take what we thought was top notch and turn it into the ordinary...

=)

Enjoy your prints!

Thanks Sam...

You can't appreciate this camera without seeing a big blowup - in spite of all of its shortcomings. I even offered to mail prints to people and no takers. Of the few people who have printed these images, everyone has been extremely excited and pleased. Although I am on the list to buy, I won't make my final decision until I have to. My main concern is that it is the first generation of a new product so you know better is down the road.

I am going to try to get ahold of a D60 to do some test prints in the 12x18 size and to compare general look feel at this size. Unfortunately there are no S2's on the island here that I know of but there are at least 4 D60's.

It wouldn't surprise me if a 16x24 looked very good also.

You're on Hawaii huh?

I am fuming already - Jealous rage is taking over!

HA!

I ordered mine from Ritz (I am #2 on their list) and from State Street Direct (I am #20 on their list) - and if they arrive before Phil does his comlete review, I will just keep them as they arrived - new & unopened. And if the review is good, one goes back and one stays. And if the review is not so hot (which I cannot forsee), then they both go back.

State Street will give a 100% refund on unopened packages for up to 14 days.

Ritz will do the same - for up to 30 days.

So - if they ship by the end of Oct, that means I have until mid-to-late Nov to see the final reviews and make up my mind.

And if the reviews are HOT! and everyone wants one - and Ritz and State have sold all their pre-orders - and people are scrambling to get one -maybe I can Ebay one of mine for a little profit instead of returning it...???

Anyway - We will see....either way - I see no harm in standing in line to get one.

What kind of a price does Ritz have. They have kind of a sleazy reputation because of some bidding stunts they pulled or may have pulled on EBAY.

PS: I demo'ed a Canon D60 labor day. Unfortunately I didn't have access to a manual and didn't know how to do bracketing. I kept one shot and printed it 12x18 tonight. Next week I will try to borrow a D60 and do some shots similar to what I have printed from the Sigma. I can tell you with fair amount of certaintly that the Sigma has more detail and resolution for this size print.

Yeah - I remember somewhere hearing that Ritz is not necessarily the best -

There price is the same at State's - $1799 - no tax and free shipping.

So - no real diff from states package.

I would like to get it from State though - to support DPR.

Hopefully - with 2 lines in the water, I should catch 1 fish eh?

And be sure to come back and let us know if you get that D60 for comparison.
