My new (used) lens reeks of cigarette smoke (as does its hood AND case). Is there any way to safely get rid of that, other than time out in the air?

I don't know of any other way but I can assure you that it will go away with time. My Sigma 70-200 2.8 arrived the same way, although in near perfect condition in other respects, but it's no longer a stinker (despite your views on Sigma lenses!)

It is pretty bad, however, when one's significant other starts complaining about the smell of one's new equipment.

Can lenses smell of smoke?? lol

Cigars maybe..

Clothes yes..breath yes, but lenses? Maybe I just got all mine from non smokers.

They do, I got some gear in the same smelly condition :D

Just leave it getting some fresh air once in a while and it will go away.

Why do you still shoot film? Because I can.

I've bought estate sale equipment that smells like dead people. Really

You can try completely cleaning all of the exterior surfaces
carefully and then setting it outside for a while.
The smoke smell should decrease quickly after the treatment.

I had a used laptop that really smelled of smoke when I got it.
After cleaning & airing, it was much better.

On a positive note, at least we on the forum
won't smell it when you post some pictures from it. :)

Msbritmor:

Once you start using the lens, the smoke odor will go away. But, if you want to try something to kill the smoke smell first, try this:
If you can find them, although I haven't seen them in years,

get the dresser drawer air fresheners that allow clothing to smell slightly perfumed.

(The fresheners are like mothballs, but of course, smell pleasant. )They're encased in small plastic spheres and the spheres have little openings allowing the aroma to escape.
I've seen them in men's accessories departments, but again, not in a long time.

I bought a lens in a Cincinnati second hand store...a Minolta MD 35-105 with macro. The lens had that definite, dusty, thrift store odor and I don't know what else revealing its abandoned history. It must have been there for some time. But,the lens worked fine and the air fresheners did too.

Put the lense in a box with the fresheners. In a few days, the smoke aroma should be gone, or at least covered temporarily.

P.S. I never thought I'd ever tell this story. The things you learn on these forums!

he stated in his add that some items may have come from a smoke enviroment, the item smelled like it came from a cigar bar!

I placed it in a scented kitchen trash bag for several days and that resolved it. I think I used about 5 bags.

You already got some good and useful tips here!

If nothing else works: boil it for 24 hours in eau-de-cologne. (You may add some garlic as well). It will never ever smell of smoke again on your camera!

Ha ha... don't tempt me. It still reeks, and I have had it sitting out since I started this thread. I did take it out to try to do a bit of shooting the other day, but all I was able to get were some shots of one of our cats and some melting snow. We have a loony cardinal hen who attacks her reflection in our windows, and that particular day she was fighting with one of our cars' side mirrors, but once I had my camera she disappeared. I think the birds are thinking that I have a gun or something.... (it's the Tammy 200-500). I'm pretty busy right now, so I will just let the thing sit there some more and hope that the smell will eventually dissipate.

Nice story about the fleeing hen. When we were kids, our parents would tell us this birding secret: "If you can put a bit of salt on it's tail, it will stand still..." - which, in its conditonal form, was completely true of course, but they had us sneak around in our garden with little teaspoons of salt... ;-)

As for the lens: why not direct a fan at it for a couple of hours / days?

Bart

Loan it to someone trying to quit smoking. He will lick any tar off of it, and suck any trapped traces of smoke out.

those kitchen trash sacks that eats odor, change it daily.

Also I think I wiped it down with febreeze daily.

If it smells that strong, it probably does have a coating of smoke residue on the barrel and maybe the front element or lens caps. Try wipeing it down with a microfiber cloth and clean the front element filter with some lens cleaner. That way you will at least be sure you aren't cleaning the barrel through use by transferring the residue to your hands. Then use the odor neutralizers mentioned above.

Actually, tonight the lens smells like the odor is finally beginning to dissipate. How long did THAT take? I extended the lens to see if that helps. The hood smells good now, but the case still stinks. I sprayed that down witih some N2O Odor Eliminator (again), and zipped it back up this time.

We're finally getting there...

Set it in a box of fresh-cut grass, the chlorophyll will absorb and dissipate most of the odor. Oh, just noticed you are in MN, nevermind...

It also works in cars, just leave the box on the floor of the back seat for a few days.

I second this! This works really well. Especially when you work on someone's PC that smokes. EEEEwwwwwww!
