Overall I'm fairly impressed with the samples. Most of the images are clean, colour rendition appears to be accurate for the most part, and the resolution is very sharp, especially seen in areas such as hair, etc. I like the overall "film-like" quality of the samples too.

However - on the very last sample here (art piece), I cannot help but notice the odd color splotching/pattern on the wood panel in the background. (A kind of purple and green ) Is this some fault in the Foveon's low light ability? Have there been any other low light/indoor samples? This appears to be taken with a flash, and at ISO 400.

Curios...

One can kind of see it again in the earlier samples of the trains in the train yard - the one on the far left - the orange and reds are mixed up in a similar pattern on the side of the rail car - and the yellow stripe, the colour is bleeding out on the edges a bit...

Foveon's low light sensitivty looks pretty bad. Ever ISO400 sameple has had very high noise levels.

Even at ISO200 and some ISO100 shots there is a lot of noise in the darker areas of the images.

But in well lit scenes at ISO100 the images have a truely stuning clarity.

While the SD9 is not right for me, I am exited about the possibilities of the "Next Generation" Foveon sensor. If they can solve the noise and reduce the crop factor it is going to be hard to beat.

I really hope they sell enough SD9s to keep Foveon alive long enough to get to the 2nd generation...

No kidding -

Thats my thoughts exactly - I think this technology offers some very superior steps forward, but may not be 100% "there" yet. Of course Sigma may make a few changes before release, but I would really like to see the DC community look into this technology seriously, and see Foveon around to make sure it keeps evolving.

I'm really interested to see what some other companies would do if they had this stuff in their hands (Canon, Nikon, Olympus), but they have not appeared very interested. Maybe if enough of these sell, they will sit up and take notice.

i too find the noise beyond acceptable. I also find the train station photo a little noisy. But that may be the result of poor lighting conditions.

The shots with the 105mm lens are great but it seems the poorer photos are the result of the Sigma lens and not the Foveon chip.

I also find theres a bit of pixilating in the chrome in the motorcycle shot. Again, most likely caused by the lens.

heres a rate sheet of he Sigma lenses from TIPA(Technical Image Press Assc.)

BFS: been there had that...got the t-shirt
Sticker Status: ON...but on upsidedown
Pie Chute: UnCorked
Lens Cap: No dangle at any angle
128mem stick: lost

Two Problems I noticed are in the following shots:

IMG04771 : What's with the odd pattern in the jeans (around the front knee). Is that really on the jeans around the knee area or was it "produced" by the camera?

IMG04792 : This image has too much noise for ISO100. Take a look at the platform areas. there is a lot of noise there.

IMG04840 : This one looks like it's been run through some trippy PS filter. No wonder they capped the camera at ISO400. Can you imagine what ISO 1000 or 1600 would look like.

Anyways...Nice sharp images all around if the conditions are near perfect, but still some problems. Pretty good I guess for 1st gen.

Remember that with any sampling sensor (as opposed to continous like film) , you will have artifacts when the source frequency approaches the sampling frequency. The presumed difference with X3 is that the artifacts will be pure pattern artifacts and not have the more noticable yellow-blue color pattern of a Bayer sensor.

IMG04792 : This image has too much noise for ISO100. Take a look at
the platform areas. there is a lot of noise there.
It is possible that Phil used a lot of exposure compensation on that shot.

The green/purple noise is pretty bad though... (on other images too) and they are big splotches of color.....

Yeah I think I'll go with dave on this one. Still it is interesting that the camera actually "sees" this and okay, well, can not record it properly because of something or other. Could this have something to do with excessive sharpening maybe (inside the camera).

This is kinda hard to say since we don't know the sharpening settings at the time Phil took the pic.

Anyways.....nice pics (the rest of them).

As I've just mentioned over on New Discussion I had to push that shot another stop to make it bright enough so it's probably equiv. to ISO 800.
