Would you sell a lens you have only used twice?

I have a Nikon 14-24mm and I ashamed to admit I have only used in twice in 1 year of owning it.

If you were in my shoes, would you keep it, as one never knows when it might come in useful or sell it and buy a piece of gear that's gonna earn its keep.

Absolutely,

If your not using it, sell it.

I just sold my 24-70 ...just never used it. Do I miss it? No way. Is my bank account happier. Absolutely.

you use it. If you can't get interested in doing what that lens wants to do, selling it might be the only thing to do. However, you might want to examine your current mood. It's easy to start shooting at the long end and forget that whole other world of wide angle, and it is just as easy to get into wide angle, forsaking everything else. It's also easy to get hooked into using a 24-70 for everything, in spite of the fact you are often wanting on both ends. I am guilty of all three sins, so it frightens me to be without all three outlets. If it were me, I think I would wait for the bite of a wide angle bug, unless there's another lens you desperately need to finance.

...definitely a good, or wise, answer.

By all accounts it's a very nice lens, but if you are not using it then trade or sell it for something that you will use. What good can it possibly do you sitting in a closet? If you are only going to need it once or twice a year, that is what lens rentals are for.

Perhaps you are just not a 'wide angle' person. Take a look at the EXIF info on your photos for the past year and see what general focal range you like to shoot at most often and then consider some lenses in that range.

Why did you buy it in the first place? Have those conditions changed, or did you just make a wrong assumption at the time?

Will you likely go back to a scenario where you will be interested in using the lens again? (I only really use my wide angles when on vacation, now that we have 2 yr old and a 2 month old, I don’t plan to use it for a stretch of at least 3 or 4 years, but I’ll not sell it as I know I will get back to using it.)

The only thing worse than taking a hit on selling a lens is taking a hit, then taking that hit again when you buy the same lens back again.

Hence is why I am getting rid of my 24-70 and going to get the 16-35 to cover the range I need. Yes I do portraits, but that is mostly what I use my 70-200 for and 24-35 is a good range as well. I will use the 50mm 1.4g as well. The thing is if you do not use it, get rid of it.

What lenses do you have? If you can not cover the 24-50 range, you might be dissapointed. Think hard about it, or get something that suits you better.

Exactly; and, this is what I was thinking, too. :|

Quite true; and, this is why my Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens is a keeper ---- and, for the same reasons, so is my Nikkor 28-70mm f/2.8 (the Beast) lens. :-)

Buy what you use and pay for what you need.

I don't care how fast or how sharp or what it looks at 100%, only matters to pixel peeper and collectors who define their happiness by their equipment or lack of it :)

If you are sure you'll not need it and will get a resonable price back, sell it. Hell even if you only get 80% its still better to have that and a few bucks in your pocket for gear you will use.

But you know the minute you sell it you might find that situation where you wanted it... so think carefully. I have a cheap Tamron 17-35 and 28-75 to get me by. I get lust often but when I reflect back on any shortcoming in the pictures I realize the guy behind the camera and lense is often the bigger problem and not the lense or model infront of the body.

Yes. I have a Sigma 150-500 that I really like, but I've only used it a handful of times in the year that I have owned it. I decided to pick up a Nikon 300 f/4 with a 1.4TC to better suit my uses. The Sigma is on the market. It basically just was sitting around and I decided I might as well free up some salary cap room. One step closer to the 70-200.

I'd ask - Do you intend on using it in the future?

Decide from there.

Cheers.

If your are not using the lens, and you are not sure whether to sell it or not, then why not let me hold on to it for you? Hey, if you ever want to use it, just come on over and it's yours (literally). Otherwise, why let it clutter up your camera bag? Just leave it with me and I will hold it for you. :)

The problem some times I think of is that there are no one lens do it all. The closes I could think is probably the nikon 24-70mm 2.8. You can think about the telephoto end, the ultra wide shot, not to mention the primes, macros, etc. I am guilty for all of that. At one time I had 8 lenses and now back down to 6 and there are some that I barely used. I just took out my nikkor 50mm1.8 after 7 mos sitting in the closet. If you think you are going to use it in the very near future keep it, if not, sell it. I sold one of mines for that reason. Too many lenses not enough usage. Still debating about selling others. Good luck!

I also had the 12-24 and though I used it more than twice, I didn't use it a lot and decided to sell it. It was a good lens but no regrets, an unused lens is as good as no lens.

I have just sold a whole raft of stuff that I was not using (300 f/4, 24-70, D300, etc) as it was taking up space and tying up money. Now I can get get a new 70-200 VRII and a 500VR.

If you are not using something, get rid of it unless it is appreciating in value or you love it.

24-70 f2.8 has competition now from the 24 f1.4!
