A Few HDR's

I really like the 2nd one! Would have been great if the snow in the lower right was smooth like the rest.

I like the first one a lot.

How do you make an HDR out of a single image? I thought you needed more than one. I understand that you can tone map one image but that is not HDR?

I have heard of people take one raw image and extracting 3 tiffs with different exposures from the raw and then post processing into HDR. I'm going to try that someday.

Anyway thanks for sharing. I've been playing with HDR since December and have really fallen in love with it.

Here is one I did at the U of Richmond Library

I have been trying this out recently with different software packages. I don't have any decent subjects with multiple exposures, just the raw. So far, I like what I see.

BTW, I like the example that you posted.

eric - the HDR sample you posted is incredible. it's a perfect balance HDR that doesnt look so 'fake' like most i usually see.

would you be willing to share what software you used and what settings you used? Ive tried playing with HDR but they always end up looking so fake and cartoony I just cant seem to get into it.

Thanks

I'll have to retrieve some of the settings and see if I saved them. This image was shot with a Nikon D300s. Raw, Nikon transfer/capture but no changes to the image settings.

5 shots in a 1+- EC bracket, So -2 -1, 0, 1, 2

Tripod of course, electronic shutter release to reduce vibration.

18mm - 35 mm Nikor ED lens. Probably around 18mm.

HDR and tone mapping with Photomatrix Pro and PP in Photoshop CS3.

Image alignment set in Photomatrix Pro and no adjustments for movement. Reduce noise and chromatic aberrations checked.

Tone Mapping To Be Reported Later

PP - curves, + constrast, - birghtness and may a few othe tweaks.

I'll retrieve the Photomatrix pro settings later when I boot my mac.

Its funny, I love the fake look as well.

Here are two samples that I love, one the cartoon look and one more realistic.

Okay more settings

18mm
ISO 400
F/14
Center Image +0.3 EV from Matrix Metered

PhotoMatrix Settings
Detailers Enhancer
Strength = 100
Color Saturation = 51
Luminosity +6.0
Microconstrast +1.6
Smoothing - Light Mode (Med)
White Point = 0
Black Point = 0
Gamma = 0.899
Temperature +1.2
Saturation Highlights = +4.0
Saturation Shadows = 0
Micro-Smoothing = 5.9
Highlights Smoothness = 9
Shadows Smoothness = 0
Shadows Clipping = 0

Note that images act very different with the same settings. So you will have to play with them.

Post some of what you try out and let us see your work.

I'm finding 3 image or 5 images tend to work good. I have processed 4 images as well. I adjust the exposure of the 0 EV image (0 in the sense of bracketing) to get the histogram as close to idea. For the D300s camera I try to avoid higher ISO than 400 or 500. A lot of noise gets introduced. Sometimes I want that noise but for a smooth image, not....

I use a tripod always.

Thanks
