Hello it's now 2010 and almost every DSLR and quality P&S has HD video mode.

No camera using this senosr has HD movie mode. It's due to sensor specifications, so we can all blame Sony for it (betting my hat it's the same ccd insire). Think Canon G11 / S90, RIcoh GRD III, etc.

I was thinking to replace my LX3 with this camera, but looks like it is joke without HD video

I passed on the G11 and I'll pass on this too. They should have used a different sensor. LX3 still rules the roost IMO until Canon bring out the G12 with HD.

I would agree the lack of HD is somewhat odd, and the same comment applies to the S90/G11 as well.

In this price range, it's kinda dumb..cheaper models have it, so you pay more for higher end..and you don't get it! Not very logical.

Not a deal breaker to all, but a needless hurt sales strategy.

They used the well tested Sony CCD that does not and can not support HD video. What it does do is (for it's size) very good still photography thanks to class leading noise performance and DR. Which in a camera like this is more important than anything else.

Using a less than stellar sensor for still photography just to support HD video totally defeats the point of a fast lens imho.

Sure I am more into stills, that's why I don't care about DSLR video a whole lot. But on a compact, esp this price..it's a bad move. I bet Canon lose sales on the S90 an G11, just because of this..that is not smart.

So use a different sensor!

In an S90 vs the new TL500, I'd probably go with the Canon because of its smaller size and further zoom, although the aperture on the Sammy is sweet indeed...but not enough for persuasion. They definitely should have waited for an HD sensor, methinks.

HD isn't a must-have for many people or maybe my Sigma DP1 keeps my expectations sub par. The form factor is appealing, looks thinner than the G11. Seems like a solid cam but is it a bit late in coming?

Samsung made this camera for photographers. People who enjoy photography will surely buy such an impressive cameras. Gadget freaks need not apply.

wait for later or next year. Hang on to your existing camera a little longer. Do not settle for one camera with HD movie, and once camera for fine pics. It is ridiculous to carry 2.

I'm sure as hell that this new camera is using the Sony ICX685cqz sensor. Same as in the Canon G11 and S90.

If you read that sensor spec sheet you realize that the sensor in Frame Readout Mode 1 can pump up to 921x690 pixels of video at 30fps.

That is much sharper than VGA video and it gives the option to do a 16:9 video at 915x518.

I hope Samsung release firmware update to correct this if they want to outsell Canon.

Other than that the camera looks almost perfect.

There is no sensor with comparable image quality and HD video capability.
Now that's funny.
It's a fact - unless of course you want not just a different sensor, but a different and larger lens, body, etc.
It depends on what you mean by "comparable." If you mean "equal", then maybe it's a fact. If you mean "similar", then the LX3 is certainly very similar, or at least at normal screen and print viewing. At any given ISO and print size, the results will be comparable. But the video resolution wont.
And don't hold your breath waiting for a firmware update.

Anyway, the LX3 is at the very end of its cycle, and I'll enjoy the spring and summer shooting HD photo AND video with the LX4/5.
