While we're all on the edge of our setas wondering what Sigma will be releasing at PMA (insert long over-speculated SD15 rumors here), I thought, well, it's been a while since I posted pics to the forum here.

...So I thought I'd share some of my various photos for any of those interested in either of these two cameras. All photos have been post-processed (many starting out in SPP but not all). I have almost as much fun processing my photos as I do shooting them so please excuse any over the top elements in that area. Anyway, here they are.

The photos here are all almost snapshots (most taken on the way to or from work as I walk through Auckland city). I don't own a tripod but did make use of some parking meters and curbs as aid to steady long exposures at night. Feel free to c&c but yeah, I already know my composition needs work. Still phasing from snapshot work-style towards something more serious. Although I'm by no means yet a professional photographer, it is kind of my dream and aim to transition to one at some time in the future, so I am open to any kind of friendly advice. Though I must say to anyone overly-negative in their replies, I may ignore your bad vibes :)

Thanks for looking and I hope these may be good samples to anyone considering one of these cameras. Feel free to ask me anything.

Very nice images with real feeling. My favorite is the open window in a (hotel?) room shot (DP1) and the black bird on green leaves background (SD14). I also like the cherry blossom with buildings shot (DP1).

Best,

Thanks! I Appreciate the comments. I need to take some more photos. I love the DP1. The SD14 I find useful for capturing the inside world, macro stuff and subject isolation while I tend to stick to the DP1 for wide-shots and capturing the atmosphere of a scene.

Some of the photos show a strong greenish colour cast which, in my view, renders the photos almost unusable.

Did you convert the pics from RAW? Even with the raw process, some users say that they attain a correct white balance under some circumstances only when they got a manual WB reading with the Expodisc WB filter.

Usable for what?

This may sound a little defensive but I think this is a good chance to discuss something that's been on my mind for a while with regards to still photography and the quest for neutral colours.

Yes, I noticed their is a greenish colour cast in some of the photos, most notably in the photos that have subjects which are coloured...green, such as leaves and plants ;)

In others I have decided to emphasize the color cast already present, rather than trying to remove it, in order to portray a mood or atmosphere.

Is it usable? Well as artform, I'd hope so, and art was my primary motivation since I'm not shooting for a client or magazine. And about colour-casts and tones - there's nothing wrong with them if done right. I come from a TV/Film background and have actually done a bit of colour-grading professionally, though that's not my specialty. In film (cinema) especially, it's quite normal to use warm or cold tones to express atmosphere. In most films shot on 35mm (and even some digital), you'll see quite a bit of exaggeration in the colour tones. It's one of the things I love about film.

Regarding that, one of the main reasons I first purchased a DP1 was because I loved the film-like tones it produced. There are plenty of cameras that produce absolutely neutral white balances and some that even reduce colour-cast but I don't believe the DP1 and SD14 are regarded as amongst these.

In any case, I thank you for your observation but stand by my choice in choosing the color-balance of most of these at least. My view is that photography is a balance of art and science. I'm a little more partial to the organics of photography and while I find the technology and form just as fascinating, I feel I have learned the rules enough to break them. In other words, not solely interested in perfecting the technical aspects.

But to answer your question, yes these all came from RAW and were converted to jpeg using a number of programs from LR to PS to SPP (where a good many of them started out). AWB was the case for 95% of them I'd say. Some of these that have unnatural tones were done for impact or artistic effect. Any maybe I am partial to the colour green... I'll have to think about that...
Thanks!

I agree with your position here. Photography is an art form, and is wide open to varying ways of expressing our artistic viewpoint, nevermind if it is that of the novice or the master. I found your photos to be enjoyable, and any that did have a particular "color cast" I felt served the "mood" of the photo as you so well described it.

I just finished watching one of the recent Luminous Landscape videos where the fellows were on an Antarctica expedition. A ship full of photogs, most of them very well known. In the studio, comparing shots afterwards, one sees an amazing variety of viewpoints of what was in most cases the same general landscape at the same time. Color balance, exposure choices, contrast, focal length and composition, a million ways to interpret the world they were seeing.

And a million ways for us to interpret ours.

On a more technical note, the other issue is one of monitor calibration. I'm leery of anyone's comments about colour if they don't specify what environment they are examining it in.

Would love to see some of your shots in print!

Best Regards, and thanks for the thoughtful post and lovely photos.
