Just p/u the 7Hi locally today and thus far, I am very disappointed w/the EVF. I tried the 7 and another (demo) 7Hi in the store and they were all terrible. I like the overall ergonomics and so I went for it anyway hoping the boxed unit would be better. Nope. When I adjust the diopter, the left side of the evf is oof. I make the left side sharp and the right side is gone. I don't even want to start on the coloration of the evf. (cheap and smeary) As I said, "am I the only one" experiencing this? I shoot two E10's and a E100RS and the E100RS EVF is vastly superior the 7Hi. I want this to work for me in view of the fact Oly let this longtime user down this week, but it would be nice to hear that others have a good evf on their 7's. Anyone? Regards, Jim N'AZ

I received my 7Hi 2 days ago and have been it enjoying since -- everything works as it should! My EVF is fine -- sharp across the window after adjusting the diopter. I adjusted the diopter by putting the camera on a tripod, setting the lens @ 200 mm focal length and using manual focus with the 4x magnification and focusing on an area with lots of detail.

I have the 7I and when I went to the camera shop to look at the 7HI tone of the things that I wanted to compare is the EVF. The 7HI's EVF did not have the left to right distortion that occurs at the sides of the 7I. I think you got a bad EVF lens and should exchange the camera for a better one. As far as the quality of the coloration of the EVF, it was only slightly improved on the 7HI.

Thanks for the replies. Yes, I am going to try another unit and see what it looks like. In this case, I am glad I bought locally and that they are quite willing to either exchange my unit or refund fully w/o a restocking fee. Hope I can get this evf issue squared away as the images look good to me. Regards, Jim N'AZ

I had the same problem in the store. Just like the prior post, the camera had to be focused while I was adjusted the diopter. It actually made a difference and I had not experience that before.

I'm not particularly happy with the EVF either and can't get it sharp from corner to corner, no matter how much I play with the diopter. As a former Olympus owner myself I don't think the EVF on my D7i is a patch on the Oly 2100UZ's, but then neither is the grip.
Other than that, I think it's a great camera :)

Hi Jim,

There certianly is a large range of experiences with the EVF on the D7 series. For me it has worked just fine. Based upon some of the comments made by other contributors to this thread, I wonder if doing the following might be helpful

1. Press the info button until the grid displays
2. Now adjust the dioptic focusing on the grid, not the image

If you can get the grid focused, then the EVF is in focus. I find that this is a whole lot easier way to adjust the EVF than trying to focus on an image. BTW, you could use any of the overlays that display information or a grid to achieve EVF focus.

If you can't get a sharp grid then it is clearly a problem with the EVF construction and it can easily be demonstrated to the store you bought it from if necessary to return it.

If you have a chance to test this, I would appreciate knowing how it came out.

Good luck,

Jim

Great idea! Can't wait to get home to try this on my 7i. I leave it at home when I go to work so I will get some work done. :-)

Not that I'm unhappy with the EVF. I think it works great. But if it's slightly out of focus and I'm not aware of it, it will work even better if it's in focus.

Thanks.

I sort of stumbled on to this, when I was trying to do manual focus at 4x mag. It always seemed a bit soft. So one day I tried to adjust the dioptic and just happend to notice the information moving in and out of focus. I discovered that I could focus in sharp on the lettering. Well from this thread, it appeared to me that if the EVF was defective in its alignment, then the easiest way to determine that would be to attempt to focus on the grid. I'm happy to say my EVF is aligned just fine.

Even with a sharply focused EVF, I think that it is still difficult to do a manual focus if you don't use the 4x mag. The image in the EVF simply isn't big enough. I'm somewhat surprised by how many people apparently choose to use manual focus all the time.

Don't work too hard :)
