Unfortunately Katzeye is a bit out of budget at the moment by the time I pay freight etc.

What about "Focussing Sceen" units ( http://www.focusingscreen.com/index.php?cPath=25_103 ) , they cost US$46.79 for what seems to be the same thing. Anyone with experience of this one too?

Yes, KatzEye does deliver to Switzerland, I ordered split screens several times.
so can u tell me your experience with screens

did u install yourself

do they work as well as they say on the tin?
I can't speak for the K-x or any other Pentax DSLR with non user replaceable viewfinder screens. I used the split screens of KatzEye on my K10D, K20D and K-7.

They do work as described. As long as the lens is faster than f/3.2, the split screens have nearly no significant impact on the light metering. From f/4, the metering starts to get affected, especially with spot metering as the center part of the viewfinder is darker than the rest.

The split screen is a great help for manual focusing lenses. I even used the split screen to calibrate the BF/FF of a few lenses on the K20D. But a split screen at 45° would be preferable.

I second you in that.

I can add that it's a little bit more tricky to change it on cameras for which it is said the focusing screen can't be changed (experienced that on a K200D).

When I say tricky, it's not that difficult in fact. It can take 1 or 2 minutes.

Cheers

so with "consumer" kit lenses, typically f4-5.6 or so you're going to have problems? do the problems affect usability/functionality?

thanks

You will likely need to compensate exposure by +1 - + 1.5EV when using spot metering. In normal exposure modes, the impact is much lower.
