Anyway, Rebel T2i/550D was never expected with these features...

I don't think a 60D makes sense anymore. With the 7D price dropping to 1400$ or so, the 600$ price difference between 7D and T2i is really not that much to justify cannibalizing some 7D sales. That said, the T2i specs are very impressive for a rebel series, including a 1080p 30 fps option with a single digic processor. I suspect several beginner folks who bought a 7d might have opted for this cheaper model if they knew it was forthcoming and put the rest on a good lens.

I mentioned this in the other thread. I still think the 60D makes lots of sense. At least for me. I don't want to spend the money for a 7D. It's beyond what I need. However, I would like a bigger body, the wheel in the back, micro adjust, maybe better auto focus and some of the extra customizable items the XXD series usually have. I wouldn't get another Rebel, and I can't get a 7D. So yeah, the 60D makes a ton of sense.

If there is to be a 60D, an interesting feature such as an articulating screen would be a nice differentiator.

The chance that Canon will "abandon" all the XXD owners is nill.

The 60D will come. Probably this month, at the latest in two or three months.

Now we know that it will have (at least) the same resolution as the 7D. The jury is still out on the autofocus, digital horizon and flash control - among a few other things.

As I have said before, the 100% viewfinder, 8 fps and weather sealing will be more than enough to differentiate the 60D and 7D by $500. Photographers are used to those kinds of pro features costing a lot more than 500.

David,

I'd love to believe you, but the 550D announcement has shaken my faith. In the past, the XXD models have been no more than 18 months apart. I suppose a March or April announcement is always possible, because they maybe have to wait for Digic V to be ready before they can make the 60D. I was sure a 60D would be announced this week, with all the features of the T2i plus the focus system of the 7D. As you said, the 8 fps, weather sealing, and viewfinder of the 7D is more than enough to justify the cost difference.

Top display for sure, all else you hope won't be thee.

It will however have a better built magnesium body,a larger/brighter pentaprism, better low-pass filter, artificial horizon and maybe(if Digic V is implemented) higher fps. These are enough to draw a serious amateur away from xxxD series.

Isn't the T2i horrible cannibalizing sales of the 1D4? Geez, why did Canon make the T2i? It's because 99% of all products sell inversely to their selling price, i.e. lower priced models sell the most and highest priced models sell the least.

So Canon wants to sell more Drebels than 50/60D's and more 60D's then 7D's! Canon has probably made more money selling both the 5D2 and the 1Ds3 than if they sold only the 1Ds3.

Kill the 60D?
I think Canon just killed the 7D AND 5DmkII

They better get on with those two models replacing them with better specs.
I'd say its time for the 7DmkII and a 3D!

7d $1400
60D $1100
550D $700

I think the price points could work out, but the 60D is in a poor position to do well. I think the price and specs on the 550D are going to make it a super hot camera.

We will have to see the specs on the 60D.

Add MA and S/R-RAW to the list. Those are software features that Canon could have included in the 550D without cost.

I believe the 60D is coming and that a lot of people are waiting for it. Not only do I agree with all the reasons I've read on this thread but, after owning a 20D for 5 years, nothing about 3.7 frames per second gets me excited.

Why the anticipation and desire? Will a new 60D make you a better photographer? Is a 50D or 40D not good enough for you... Just wondering.

I don't quite get these next model wish lists threads. But oh well, I guess I should continue working on my skills to get the max out of what I own.

Cheers and carry on,

Dont forget:
  • GPS
  • SD Card
  • WiFi?
When I switced from Nikon in Oct my original desire was essentially a 50D+Video. But it didn't exist so I got a 7D on the Best Buy 0% plan with the intention to sell it (at a loss justified as a "rental fee") IF the 60D had SD, articulating screen and GPS.

I really want to see what the 60D "really" is so I can figure out what fits me best.

There are huge differences remaining in the cameras, including FPS, viewfinder, weather sealing, AF subsystem... you name it. Seems like every time Canon introduces a new Rebel, someone declares the higher end cameras dead. There are many large and even more subtle differences between the lines, not to mention very different handling and feel. No way will it replace either the 5DII or the 7D. Not a chance.

The 50D is obviously a great camera. The 40D? Not so much. Kind of half baked, with buggy auto-ISO and a low-res screen.

Yes, the 60D will allow me to take better pictures. Moving pictures. And still photos with more detail and less noise than both my 30D and the 50D.

Also, with built in wireless flash triggering, it most definitely will let me take better photos. More creative flash photos.

If they have the good sense to include > 3 shot bracketing, it would make me take better HDR shots when there are things moving slightly in the frame.

Exactly.... even a lower resolution articulated LCD is fine... if Sony can do it (920K vari-angle in A550) why not Canon?
