I'm still learning to take a photograph, using my d300s + 50mm at f1.8 speed 1/250 iso 200. Please give me an honest critique to help me improve. Thanks before hand

Hi

Your photo seems to be out of focus. Trying to use an aperture of F1.8 is really tricky, perhaps try using a smaller aperture of F8 or so...

Is a good shut, color, composition are ok. the problem is a focus, I like see on focus the butterfly, your picture don't show this. I know is not easy but try again

bye Cariboou!

Thanks, may I ask, even the butterfly's eyes is not focused? I focused in the eyes only, since I'm trying to learn the dof.
Sorry if it's a stupid question. Thanks

Even if focus and DOF is good, camera or subject movement can result in not sharp image.
This could also be your problem.
Suggest using f8 and 1/500 sec and whatever ISO that requires.

Very nice color - good composition but as mentioned it is out of focus. try to use a tripod and 500 shutter speed +f9 ,try to change the angle view.make the butter fly in front

Your problem here isn't that the butterfly's eyes aren't in focus (looks to me they are, in fact, in focus). Many samples of the 50mm are VERY soft at 1.8 (mine is, too), which appears to be the main issue affecting this image.

The second issue is that when you stop down to sharpen the lens up you also decrease the softness of the background, which ultimately detracts from your subject.

50mm isn't a great focal length for the type of image you are making here and the distance you are from your subject. More of a tele lens, like a 105mm macro, would allow you to stop down but retain a soft background.

Your composition is good and the butterfly is positioned very nicely to get a nice view of its wing design.
