I have two machines, a PII 266 and a PIII 1g. The file transfer to my machine from the D100 takes 23 minutes with my PII, Dazzle Usb 1.1 and a 1g microdrive. I need a faster system.

Which system, firewire or USb 2.0 is the fastest and most likely to servive?

Which system is being included on the new computers?

Does not the Fugi S2 comes with an firewire system, is firewire the default system for digital file tranfer?

Firewire got a good following for video capture, but isn't very common on consumer PC's. New PC's are starting to come with USB-2, which has the advantage of downgrading smoothly to 1.1. Tecnically, USB2 is 20% faster than firewire in raw speed, but it's irrelevant when talking about CF transfer. You'll be severely limited by the CF card speed.

I use USB-2.0 for both my CDR (40x Plex) and my CF card reader (IOGEAR).

Don't expect any extra speed from the "Dazzle Hi-Speed USB 2.0" device becuase "hi-speed" is a term defined by the USB 2.0 consortium to mean USB 1.1 speeds - believe it or not.

You can get firewire readers and DV cameras are not adopting USB 2.0. If you were to get one interface only get the firewire. You will be insured of full speed use on a reader.

I just got a new laptop from Compaq and it has both USB2.0 and Firewire. I have USB2.0 and Firewire external hard drives and the USB2.0 is just a tad faster than the firewire. So the standards are very close.

I have not yet located a true "full speed" usb2.0 reader for digital photography work. Lexar's firewire CF reader works great though.

Hope that helps!

I think they'll both survive but Firewire seems to be THE choice
for the professional Video/Photography community, currently.
It's hassle free (don't need drivers for each devices), draws less power,
and, believe it or not , it is faster than the USB, contrary to what the paper
specs suggests. Someones lying here.

I have the D100 and use 512mb Ridata cards, I have a P111 machine, I purchased a firewire PCI card and a Unity Digital firewire reader and it transfers the whole card in 2 mins, you can almost see the steam comming of the reader.
Cheers

As USB upgraded, Firewire will soon be upgraded also. Don't know about backward compatibility with the current Firewire.

Tom's Hardware Guide echoed the above about IEEE1394b coming out at the end of 2003 supporting 3.2Gbps when reviewing USB 2.0 in relation to USB 1.1. I thought it was a pretty good article.

The conclusion of this article is here http://www17.tomshardware.com/storage/02q2/020410/usb2-14.html#conclusion where it mentions the proposed speed of the new Firewire. Go to the introduction of the article to read it all.

I hope the second generation of Firewire is everything they say it'll be. I'll gladly wait.

Which firewire card reader should I get? Lexar? Unity Digital? Microtech?
Anyone aware of reliability issues / compatibility problems with Ridata cards?

Thanks

I know of three different computers that all have the FireWire Lexar readers and they work perfectly
