(Pre)ordered a Powshot G3 Today!

Just curious if I am the first to pre-order it or has anybody else? I figured since they do not charge until its shipped out, and I can cancel anytime until then- what do I have to loose? I might as well get on the list before the rush hits and it then becomes backordered or something (= Also, if I am not impressed with Phil's review of the G3 then I will cancel and look further into a different model camera. I will keep you posted with any info.

I tryed to pre-order one from my local dealer, they aren't taking orders on them as of yet. They claim that other than the Canon press release they have no other official information or pricing on the G3 and don't expect it until after Photokina. They will at that time start excepting orders! I want to be at the top of that list, I sold my beloved black G2 waiting for the G3!

I ordered the G3 the day following the release from my local store, Rowe Photographic and Video, Rochester, NY. I paid 768.00 I had just purchased a G2 Black, was able to return it before the 2 week return period, I applied that credit towards the G3. I'm the first one on their list....lucky me!

I know what you mean. Canon Australia (faceless corporate website) still shows the G2 as the "latest news".

Retailers here have been kept in the dark by Canon (surprise) and no-one can say when or if G3 will be released down under.

I resent being forced into buying a G3 from overseas (warranty issues etc) so I will now look at Nikon 5700 or Sony 717 who's manufacturers seem to care about thier customers and more importantnly are in stock today.

The Nikon images certainly don't look that sharp and the 717 isn't shipping yet. Maybe they are affraid of issues so they are making the US be the giene pig on the G3.

You are not alone.

I just could not wait any longer. I still use my G1 and like it. . . . but I have always drooled over the images the G2 can pump out, so after looking at other cameras for a while and looking at the noise in the 5MP camera images, I decided the G3 is probably the best I can do in my price range and G1'ish size. Looking at what happened with the G2 prices after release, I decided that the $799 price at State Street Direct was probably about as good as I was going to get before Christmas!

When I bought my G1 it was after Christmas and I still ended up paying almost list price for the camera! At least this is $100 under list (providing they ever actually get any cameras from Canon)

I agree with you re the other cams.

But I think the opposite on the "guinea pig" theory.

USA market - +220 million.
Europe - +700 million
Australia 18 miliion. (eeep)

Why not use a tiny tiny market like Oz to iron out the bugs rather than release them wild into your biggest two.

Instead we seem to get allocated 0.00001 cameras per head of population.

Arrrggghhhh !!!!!!!!!

Well the retailer replied and said:

'Deliveries of this new product are expected shortly.

We will advise when this product is in stock and on the way to you. If the delay is a problem, please advise.'

So they -say- they should get them soon... wonder if we will have it at our doors before Oct 30th?

I received email that says it will be come to stock bit after 15.10.2002 so.. waiting and waiting ;)

As far as I remember the G2 prices went back to list for a while immediatly after release because it was hard to get one. I thought I would get a G3 before the prices go back up to list. With my luck I am probably wrong, and the prices will immediatly go down after I get mine. . . . . but at least I will have a new camera :)
