After taking some pictures of some ducks, I looked up into a tree and noticed a big bird sitting there sleeping. I took several shots of it sleeping and awake. I think it's a heron, although my bird identification skills are lacking. I was under a heavy tree canopy on an overcast day.

I've included an original (with levels adjustment) and a version after I used Neat Image to reduce the noise. Unfortunately, I don't really know how to use Neat Image well and I think it made the new version a little too "smooth". If I keep staring at the new version, I sorta get to like it, although I'd prefer if it the change wasn't so severe.

While this

is a rather terrible pic of one. I do believe it is a blue herron & quite a bit larger than your bird. I could be wrong though... this

& this

might also be herrons

I don't think her bird is a herron either, unless of course there are so many variations of the species that could be so dissimilar. Plus I'm no birder either & could be completely wrong on all accounts....LOL
I "ID'd" it by looking at this pic from Daniella. My bird looked
similar (although much poorer quality pic.)

if you are interested in bird identification, you can check out many bird types here. there are a lot of different types of herons and egrets along the east coast.

this website is very helpful, go down to the Quick Finder section, click on the family of bird you are interested in, it will pull up the entire family.

If you are keen on bird photography, it's nice to know what you're getting picture of. I hope you find it helpful.

Your pictures are of a Great Blue Heron and I think the white bird is an Egret. I spent the day yesterday shooting (pictures) of herons. One was posted earlier today. Neat birds!

I have a lot of bird pictures taken with my old camera, SLR's with zoom lenses. I bought a Minolta Dimage Scan Dual negative and slide scanner, but it sure takes a long time to scan a picture, clean up the flaws to get it right! It's almost too easy with digital, I use ACDSee Version 3.1 to view my pictures, I use the "enhance" feature and choosing "Auto levels" is about all the retouching I ever have to do. It's a great program.

I just uploaded my first picture to pbase, it's a photo of a northern gannet. They seldom are found on shore except when nesting, I think he may have been injured, he let me walk quite close and made no move to get away. This was taken on June 30th, on the New Jersey coast.

We have a lot of shore birds around here, I moved down here four years ago from Canada, I'm really enjoying it :)

Another good bird ID site is

Nice picture. Really good detail on the bird. Hope it felt better.

added some pics of birds, I think I have it figured out now

This is a Night Heron...it is a heron in deed. They are more bulky than usual heron but heron still. There is also the green heron that is similar to the night heron but this is definitly a night heron.

They hand near the ducks because they eat ducklings.

They are called night heron because they usually come out at night and sleep during the day.

I can't tell what the bird in flight is, I'm not a birder either, but the grey bird standing in the water is a Great Blue Heron, and the standing white bird is a common Egret (also a member of the Heron family).

I have Neat Image, and it's 'OK'. I have trouble using it to, so I don't, usually. The support team for Neat Image is excellent though, so dont' hesitate to write them emails. I actually prefer your original. A very fine shot indeed!

Best regards,

I didn't take the time to read all the posts, so this may have been suggested already, but....have you tried a 'fill flash' adjustment? That might lighten the bird a bit.....but I'm no expert. I agree with you that the first shot looks better to me also. Well done!

I shouldn't be up at one in the morning on the computer. I meant "I have trouble using it, TOO (not 'to'). I felt compelled to correct that. Sorry for the boo-boo, gang.
