Apple iPad

It seems like it could be possible, as Apple are introducing the camera connection kit, which attaches to the usual itouch/iphone/ipad connector and features a USB connector on the other end. Shame that they're not doing a CF Card reading attachment, seems thzat it's SD card only.

Should be easy to connect up though, just a case of a bit of software development.

Would be great to be able to do a direct tether out in the field, although I suppose you'd need to shoot RAW + JPEG, so the ipad to show the JPEG image. I presume that it's wont work as a RAW viewer?

And yes, I am a fanboy. (iMac 27" i7, MBP, MB, 4 iPhones, i don't even know how many iPods in several iterations).

First off: Style-Apple is the king of style. People buy Apple stuff because they look cool. Regardless of how crappy it is.

Why I am getting one:

For Photography:

1. Tethering? (sorta): With camera connection kit I will be able to load jpg files straight onto it and manipulate with any number of different apps. These apps always save a separate version so u have your original file intact. Downside here is resolution. Some apps do not save large resolution photos. There are some very nice capable apps, however. You won't be able to necessarily tether the iPad to your camera. BUT, you can do the next best thing which is take a photo and then upload it straight to the iPad and chimp it. Make the necessary adjustments in camera and do it again. Maybe not the most elegant approach but definitely doable. No? Much more portable than my 15" MBP. Downsides: a) Have to keep up with the little dongles that will be required for USB or SD. b) Only gonna be JPEG, no RAW (yet!). I bet there may "be an app for that", eventually. c) Kinda clumsy method for chimping. d) Resolution. Upsides: a) A workaround to tethering which is light and highly mobile, b) Would be great for showing clients/models how pics are coming out, as well as completed albums/examples from other shoots for ideas/uploading onto FB/Flickr/Twitter etc. immediately. c) If u don't have an iPhone (say you prefer a Blackberry) then you can now use onOne's app (DSLR Camera Remote PRO) to truly tether to your laptop (and keep your beloved Blackberry.) I am sure there are more pluses and minuses in photography than what I have mentioned, but this is getting long. LOL!

2. For home: There are a number of apps which can remotely control many of the items in your house. Once again everyone assumes that all who would buy one of the iPads are already iPhone/Touch owners and thus there would be redundancy. Not true. There are millions out there with regular phones who would buy an iPad and then would be able to run all the same apps as the iPhone/Touch without having to own one of those devices as well. Also many times after we have the kids in bed my wife and I will go to the bedroom and.......... (LOL) she will turn on TIVO and watch her shows while I bring my MBP in there and surf/bills/etc... The MBP, as great a computer as it is, gets very hot and is bulky. I will use the iPad for this all the time.

3. Kids: I have a 10yo and a 4yo. We buy Blu-ray. Many, if not most, of the Blu-ray discs now come with a digital copy of the movie as well. I have all these on my iPhones/Touches. My kids are constantly running down the batteries on the iPhones while playing games and watching movies. With the 10hr battery life, these will be fantastic for in-the-car peace-and-quiet devices! I am not too thrilled about the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad however.

4. Work: I do anesthesia. I work a lot of hours and when on-call/late I often have a lot of downtime when all the cases for the day are done and I am waiting for a trauma case or OB to call for an epidural/c-sxn. I carry my MBP with me to work every single day. You can't imagine how many people tell me how heavy my bag is with the laptop and power cord in there. What do I do with my MBP while there? Surf for the vast majority of the time. This will unload about about 4-7 pounds out of my bag now! May not sound like much, but trust me, it is!

5. There are a number of other reasons for getting the iPad. But I just thought I would share. And yes, I too am disappointed with the lack of flash and mutlitasking apps. Espcially with the speedy little chip they have in it. But, I'll get over it. It will still do the things that I want it to do with aplomb!

It's just a flesh wound!

This is a consumer product aimed consumers who want a portable device that is offers a better video, web browsing, ebook experience than the smaller iphone and itouch yet offers size and weight advantages over a laptp.
It is nearing the size of the small laptops.
The absence of Adobe's Flash is something I hope Apple is trying to fix.
That is a huge problem. It lacks web browsing feature that would cripple navagation
Personaly, I am adapting a "wait and see" attitude before judging the deivice usefulness to photographers. I suspect there will be new applications for photographers coming soon.
Ok, then how much and will it be as good as Adobe Photoshop? I think not. It has major issues and incompatabilities right out of the gate. You can wait and see if you want, I dont' have to because I know it is overpriced, flash is broken, and no apps or expensive apps that will never equate to photo editor in MS. Stilll dont see the atraction

"Ok, then how much and will it be as good as Adobe Photoshop? I think not."

Is anyone replacing their Uber-PS computers with Netbooks for PS these day? Or their MBP or their latest I3 mobile HP 15" with Netbooks for heavy photo editing? I think not;) For PS, we all must (for optimum performance) spend some money on a computer, whether laptop or desktop...on the speedier, dual or quad core chips, lotsa (4-8-12....hell, I have 16gigs of RAM in my MacPro) RAM, terrabyte or two TB 7200rpm drives (they don't make these in 2.5" yet)...graphics cards, etc. The list goes on, but you get my point. To run PS, one still needs to spend some money on a decent computer/specs to get optimum, 64bit performace, regardless of your OS.

"It has major issues and incompatabilities right out of the gate. You can wait and see if you want, I dont' have to because I know it is overpriced, flash is broken, and no apps or expensive apps that will never equate to photo editor in MS. Stilll dont see the atraction"

You are speculating. You haven't seen it, touched it, played with it...yet you know already that it's "Overpriced, Flash is broken, and apps that don't = MS photo editors." To me, that seems a bit ridiculous...I've owned the iPhone for 2 years and the apps pertaining to photography on mine number in the dozens. Some are silly, some are excellent, and many are some where in between. Are any of them as powerful as PS? No! And I'll be the first to admit it...but again, read my first paragraph....Who is editing with PS on a Netbook, cheap PC? Or even extensive editing on Macbooks? It's not aimed at "Pro" work....but I have faith that it's going to make a hell of an intermediary between cam and editing rig...with a Boat-Load of excellent and not-so-excellent photo editing apps....There is already a Photo Shop app on the iPhone....and it's FREE!!!! And, you can directly transfer to PS when you get back home to your main editor....and not necessarily pictures you've taken with your iPhone...

...But, in my case, from my 5d2 and 7d:) There are plenty of apps that turn your phone into a little hard drive for storage...and to date, with the dozens of apps I have on my iPhone...the ONLY one I've spent more than 10 bucks on is the OnOne DSLR remote for my cams....Freaking incredible....directly to my Mac Pro, live view in the phone...work great for getting the kids and pets in position and snapping the shot from the front (with visual). The list goes on, but certainly, I don't find the apps expensive (and I'm pretty frugile)....Heck, I just bought Tiger Wood's PGA (From EA Sports) for $5! And I don't really play video games...just this one on our PS3 (I have kids)....and on Play station, it's 10 times that price!!!! (Actually, 12x on release at $60!)....

So again....I understand you are a MS guy and that's cool (I was for 18 years...until 2 years ago when Vista sent me over the edge)...but negative speculation will only keep you that much further from the Pearly Gates of Apple:) (Kidding:))

The big consumer device at CES this year was eReaders. Amazon is already selling tons of theirs and it does nothing but books and is B&W. The new readers at CES were looking at price points like the iPad and some even higher.

Last year Netbooks were big and a lot sold and they still sell pretty well. More are introduced all the time.

The iPad sits between both markets and has other features that will appeal to many. The iPad will be a nice device for surfing the web, much easier to use and carry than a laptop. The iPad will be a great eReader - you may not like ereading but it is growing and will be a big market. Other features that will appeal to many - great portable movie player and will be a really fun gaming device.

I think an iPad with DSRL Remote Pro will be a really cool device. I really enjoy using DSLR Remote in the studio. Great way to easily review pictures with people in the studio without having to pass around the camera or have them get up and go look at a computer screen.

I probably won't get a 1.0 iPad, I will wait, Apple moves pretty fast. But, Apple will sell plenty of iPads.

"Ok, then how much and will it be as good as Adobe Photoshop? I think not."

Is anyone replacing their Uber-PS computers with Netbooks for PS these day?
Sure, some do, but the computer has to be powerful enough
Or their MBP or their latest I3 mobile HP 15" with Netbooks for heavy photo editing? I think not;)
If the netbook is powerful enough sure why not. But my point was, for the price, you can get a laptop for that price, even a netbook with a hard drive could be used in a pinch. Especially when you take a plane, do a shoot and post results from the hotel.
For PS, we all must (for optimum performance) spend some money on a computer, whether laptop or desktop...on the speedier, dual or quad core chips, .......To run PS, one still needs to spend some money on a decent computer/specs to get optimum, 64bit performace, regardless of your OS.
I disagree, I have used a slow laptop when my hard drive failed in my laptop (I dropped it) so I had to take my old slow one for backup. It worked fine, Not as fast but we were dealing with this slowness years ago when computers were not as fast, people run it without optimum performance or even a mac for years.

"
You are speculating. You haven't seen it, touched it, played with it...yet you know already that it's "Overpriced,
It was in a presentation by Apple that it would be 500, at least the minimal model, we know this from them.
Flash is broken, and apps that don't = MS photo editors." To me, that seems a bit ridiculous...I've owned the iPhone for 2 years and the apps pertaining to photography on mine number in the dozens. Some are silly, some are excellent, ...Who is editing with PS on a Netbook, cheap PC?
People that can't afford and expensive laptop or would rather spend the money on lenses or a new camera.
Who said anything about pro work. Pros use laptops all the time, not sure of your point. They edit their images in a hotel with a laptop. But if you are talking about using the Ipad for storage only to edit when you get home, there are better and cheaper methods of doing this, a laptop is one of them, and you can edit right there.
...But, in my case, from my 5d2 and 7d:) There are plenty of apps that turn your phone into a little hard drive for storage...and to date, with the dozens of apps I have on my iPhone...the ONLY one I've spent more than 10 bucks on is the OnOne DSLR remote for my cams....Freaking incredible....directly to my Mac Pro, live view in the phone...work great for getting the kids and pets in position and snapping the shot from the front (with visual). Good point, you can buy a ps3 now for games for 299 and get a $300 laptop, both of them will have more capability than the Ipad. And they are dedicated.
So again....I understand you are a MS guy and that's cool (I was for 18 years...until 2 years ago when Vista sent me over the edge)...but negative speculation will only keep you that much further from the Pearly Gates of Apple:) (Kidding:))
I am glad you are happy with your Iphone. I prefer a dedicated phone that I don't run down the battery playing games, music, videos, etc. I prefer a dedicated mp3 player that is tiny (I think it was 30 bucks, has a rechargable AAA battery that I can swap out if I have no way to charge it. And it sounds great on the plane and on the drive to the stadium

Getting to the pearly gates is going to cost you quite a lot of money when Nirvana can be achieved with a cheap laptop and windows on a budget. It leaves you more money to buy what you really want, better camera gear or money for other hobbies, at least for me.

You tried to put up an argument and it still did not convince me and I don't see the attraction. I am putting together an I5 system home system with a solid state drive, 10000 rpm HD for storage and a super fast video card for games, for under 1400 bucks. That is heaven to me, the only thing better is if it were less expensive so I could use that money for other hobbies. A computer is a tool. The Ipad is not even a computer will never be the tool that a good laptop will be. To me it is just eye candy and status sybol, I can read books on the laptop. At least the Iphone has a primary funtion as a phone, I don't see the attraction when you can get a PSP to perform similar functions for less)

I flew out to the Anaheim Supercross, took my old laptop (since I have not replaced the hard drive in my new laptop), edited my pic using raw, removed most of the terrible high ISO noise from my old 8mp camera and posted it that night, the laptop was cheap and did its job.

The Ipad is not for me before it was ever created. Most apple products are not for me because they are overpriced and I can have heaven on a budget.

...But, in my case, from my 5d2 and 7d:) There are plenty of apps that turn your phone into a little hard drive for storage...and to date, with the dozens of apps I have on my iPhone...the ONLY one I've spent more than 10 bucks on is the OnOne DSLR remote for my cams....Freaking incredible....directly to my Mac Pro, live view in the phone...work great for getting the kids and pets in position and snapping the shot from the front (with visual). I'm sorry, are you actually comparing a game APP being run on an iPhone to a game programed for and run on a game console? If you honestly dont see the difference then it is no wonder that you are ok with all the shortcomings and compromises available on the iPad.

And yes, I am a fanboy. (iMac 27" i7, MBP, MB, 4 iPhones, i don't even know how many iPods in several iterations).
First off: Style-Apple is the king of style. People buy Apple stuff because they look cool. Regardless of how crappy it is.
First off, apple stuff is not crappy, they make a good product. It is just overpriced. Some people buy stuff for style, nothing wrong with that, but then don't try to justify the price to others. If you have the money, buy what you want, but I am on a budget and look for the big bang for the buck and value. Apple has never had that and while that is ok with you, it is not with me and many others. Be happy with your purchase and don't try to justify your purchase with features (not saying you are doing this.)
Why I am getting one:

For Photography:

1. Tethering? (sorta): With camera connection kit I will be able to load jpg files straight onto it and manipulate with any number of different apps. These apps always save a separate version so u have your original file intact. Downside here is resolution.
Pretty big downside, a laptop does not have this issue.

Maybe not the most elegant approach but definitely doable. No? Much more portable than my 15" MBP. Downsides: a) Have to keep up with the little dongles that will be required for USB or SD. b) Only gonna be JPEG, no RAW (yet!).

No raw, another big downside if I were considering it to replace my laptop when I travel
Sounds like you are trying to justify your purchase. I am glad you are happy with the feature limitations
3. Kids: I have a 10yo and a 4yo. We buy Blu-ray. Many, if not most, of the Blu-ray discs now come with a digital copy of the movie as well. I have all these on my iPhones/Touches. I am not too thrilled about the 4:3 aspect ratio of the iPad however.
4:3 is another major downside if that is truly the case.

I use a projector to watch movies with a large surround sound system. I don't watch TV that much but my laptop has a HD tuner built in if I want to watch broadcast while traveling, but really most hotels have cable with works pretty well and no need to drag out the laptop. I don't watch that much tv anyway.
4. Work: I do anesthesia. I work a lot of hours and when on-call/late I often have a lot of downtime when all the cases for the day are done and I am waiting for a trauma case or OB to call for an epidural/c-sxn. Surf for the vast majority of the time. This will unload about about 4-7 pounds out of my bag now! May not sound like much, but trust me, it is!
This is a real good reason to own one and I would consider it if the price was right. But flash is broken
5. There are a number of other reasons for getting the iPad. But I just thought I would share. And yes, I too am disappointed with the lack of flash and mutlitasking apps. Espcially with the speedy little chip they have in it. But, I'll get over it. It will still do the things that I want it to do with aplomb!
Maybe if Apple gets it right next time and reduces price I would consider it, but by then, the rest of the manufacturers will have something similar for lower cost and probably a bigger screen.

I'm considering ways to use iPad as a photog and I'm not sure it can replace a laptop or...? Epson P4000... nope, not yet anyway. Unless it adds something I don't need to include an iPad to my kit. Is it just another thing to lug around for now? Maybe we'll see some app's for it that enable more photog or business uses.

Perhaps using it to show my portfolio during the sales pitch to a B&G? It seems short of the laptop in presentation capabilities. The MacBook Pros are pretty elegant and capable at showing portfolios.

While some are dismissive, the iPhone/iTouch was such a success that I'm certain a bigger version will sell well, too. (I can't get by without my iPhone now.) With the app's & color against the Kindle & Nobel eReader the iPad seems like a no brainer in comparison. But for the pro photog, what...?

Cheers,
JB

for something lighter than a laptop that does a few things well. As I said, as a photo portfolio and with an e-mail client, and maybe an e-book reader, this might be a decent replacement for a SECOND laptop, not your first. Were I to get one, it would be my fourth computing device.

It is worth watching, but I won't be an early buyer, if I buy at all.

Just as pretty much anything that Apple does you don't buy the first edition. Wait for the 2nd and 3rd they always improve on the product. Then it might be worth it.

I'm still using XP on all of my computers, as Vista was a brand new from the ground up OS. Windows 7 is Vista with a few bugs killed and tighter code. I'd buy a Win7 machine, but won't touch Vista at all, as what I have works. Two of my PCs have 512 meg, and one has a gig of memory. Couldn't run Vista on any of them without adding memory.

Then again, I only change operating systems when I buy a new computer.

That's just me. As they say, YMMV...

Apple in their wisdom has decided not to include USB on the Ipad itself so DSLR Remote will not work as it requires a USB cable connection to the camera to function tethered... If you are going to use it in the craddle you may as well have a laptop/desktop computer.

"Thanks" Apple

I don't think the naysayers are missing that point. Most of the naysayers I have seen on this forum don't deny that this could be a useful tool for some people. What I, and certainly a few others have been saying nay to, is when the Apple Fanboys come out saying that this device will be a "Gamechanger".

Yes, a useful and smart little device, but it won't change any games as it is not innovative or even flexible enough to be a game changer.

I, of course, could be wrong but I don't think there are many people denying the usefulness or potential practicalities of the device.

:)
Looks to be an incredible device. What I think naysayers are missing is that its not intended to be a full featured computer. It does what it does in a nifty format.

Most people seem to be looking at this and asking how can they use it to make pictures.

I think that's the wrong question.

I think the question is, will this device increase the overall consumption and demand for professional pictures? And my guess is, yes.

I can see lots of ways that a few million of these things in the hands of consumers will lead to new ways for me to sell my work.

And to me, that's a good thing.

As far as the rest of my business goes, I expect to be using it instead of my old clipboard and forms to get client info at the beginning of a session, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a credt card reader attachment soon as well. All good.

To say that it's just a big itouch -- sure it is. In the same way that a 300mm lens is just a big wide angle. It sort of misses the point. The itouch is amazing for what it can do for its size -- but a lot of things it does -- will be better -- much better at the size of the ipad.

Is it for everybody? Nope. But then, lets remember what conventional wisdom said about the ipod, iphone, and itouch when each of these were released.

Best,
Paul
