dpreview to become the the new 'Microsoft' as far as photo-hosting is concerned?

Depends on the feature set and their target audience. The main photo hosting sites today are completely different and attract different audiences. I don't think it's possible to have a one size fits all site.

been going over 10 yrs .. last count .. many 10's millions of photos
other photo hosting sites are probably as big

and they'll all live together fine :-) doubt that any 1 will ever "wipe" the others out, or even "threaten" them. It's not like a MS thing at all.

They certainly have added more features and enhanced those that already exist.

This just means they are providing more services for us, and we are getting it for free.
DPR doesn't do anything for free either. It's a commercial site. More traffic to the site, and more money they make. That's like saying that google does everything for free just because the users don't pay anything.
Microsoft never does anything for free.
Microsoft has Bing search engine (with cash back for ebay items). That's "free" according to your definition. Microsoft also has Windows live photo gallery ( http://gallery.live.com/ ) too, among other things.
