Supposed entry Olympus m4/3 size comparison

Just to clarify. Are you saying that the shadow represented on the E-P1 and GF1 pics are the dimensions of a rumoured Olympus M4/3... significantly smaller size than existing models..

If yes, good move, as I cannot see why Olympus went for such big bodies when GH1 gives all EVF, Flash, High-res rotating LCD, stereo mics... in a body not wider or higher... (only deeper)

Indeed.

Sensor based stabilization tends to require a lot of space.

Nicely done. Thx. (nt)

--From scaling the teaser photo to me it appears that the proportions of the body look be just a bit wider maybe halfway between existing models and what depicted? Also the teaser seems to show the right side looking from front higher ie mini rangefinder style?

The height of new model similar to both GF1 and EPs which is required for the lenses built for them so still feasible this is an interchangeable lens camera as a result otherwise could have also reduced the height some if a very small non interchangeable lens fitted ie no higher the X1 at 2.3" while GF1 is 2.8".

I think the point of no IBIS to save space, cost, and differentiate between higher models very likely but then not necessary if this is a fast wide non-interchangeable lens in the first place?

Oly please put in faster contrast AF as no need to make compatible with 4/3 lenses and use a OLED screen in back. None of these require any additional space.

IF(!) this is the entry level µ43 model from Olympus it wouldn't be very wise to give it important features above the current E-P1 / E-P2 if Olympus doesn't want to kill sales on that cameras.

Olympus will make it cheaper. This should be enough for an entry level µ43 camera at current stage, IF(!) this really is a µ43 camera.

It was funny looking at the orange tobacco tin again. It made me realise that the camera design of the E-P1 was a long way off but it looks the 17mm f2.8 had already been designed by then.

Wow so the new Oly will be translucent. Very cool.

I'm not sure I would want a smaller m4/3 camera... my GF1 is significantly easier to hold and use the controls when compared to smaller compact P&S cameras I have used... but of course there will always be someone who appreciates an even smaller option.

I should take a photo of my GF1 next to the Pentax IQ Zoom 35mm film camera I still have on my shelf from the early 90s. They are pretty similar in size, but the GF1 is slimmer and slightly more coat pocketable in my opinion.

That sounds about right, because I was using my GF1 and 20mm pancake the other day when someone I know asked me if it was a digital camera. I guess most people are used to digital cameras being either really slim and small or really big DSLR types.

I bet the EP1, with its retro styling (which I love), gets mistaken for a film camera even more often.

--Latest FT2 rumor out of China posted in 43rumors.com is an entry m4/3 interchangeable lens camera with flash, no video, no EVF but opt VF, comes with either 14mm or kit zoom for est $ 650 Hongkong maybe $550 US? Still not clear if IBIS but as no mention I would assume it is missing, but since no EVF there maybe was still room to include inspite of smaller body & flash?

I think that the difference in price between this and what EP1 can be bought right now is close so maybe they are assuming EP1 will go away in place of EP2 w/o EVF?

--I think yes it is since China sources seem to be a little freer with their early leaks of the real thing?

I agree. I shoot with an E-P2 and the size is just right for me. It's hard to imagine mounting heavier, longer lenses than the 14-42/14-45 kit zooms on a small body like the rumored one. However, size preference is subjective.

This seems to be a model designed by marketing directors rather than engineers. Somebody at Olympus realized that there is still a vacuum at the low segment of m4/3 and commissioned a camera that had to be as diminutive as possible, no matter how badly crippled it ends up being.

It seems that Olympus is walking on thin ice, careful not to upset (again) early adopters of the E-P1 while still offering digicam users a substantial upgrade at an attractive price. In that sense such an offering may be a reasonable compromise.

This camera also addresses the pocketability issue of m4/3 to some extent, although those complaining about m4/3 being too large will be the first to dismiss this model for whatever shortcomings it may have.
