I bought a D-100 and put my Sigma 24-70 f2.8 on it. No focus, no meter. Just like a lens without a CPU. All works fine on my F-100 and N-90s, but not the D-100. I went to Wolf/Ritz were the lens was purchased and tried several Sigma's and none of them worked on the D-100. Tamrons Tokinas and Nikkors work fine. Any suggestions as the lens is 90 days old and as useful as a digital boat anchor.

I am probably not mentioning anything youre not already aware of but just in case.............I own a N90s and have a Sigma 70-200 HSM AF-D capable lens that works fine. I have read that there were 'older' chips that caused lock-ups with AF. Sigma will provide a free replacement. However your lens is the new MONSTER 82mm thread size right?
I believe this was happened with the modestly older (1 yr old) Sigma lenses.

As for the possiblity of NOT being compatible, ouch. The reason I splurged for my 70-200 was because I anticipated a jump to the D100. This lens is certainly not worth it, if its not capapble of working with the digital camera.

I currently have the Sigma 24-70, 17-35 and 100-300. These all work fine with my D-100 and F-100. I do experience problems with the 17-35 on my F-80.

With the F-80 I get the F-- message on the LCD pannel and you need to give the lens an extra twist to get it to electricaly mate with the body. This is nolonger of any importance as the F-80 was the backup for the F-100 and now the F-100 is the backup for the D-100 and the F-80 gathers dust on the shelf.

If this is happening with your D-100, it may be worth getting it checked as well as the lens.

I have a D100 and a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 HSM AFD... And am having trouble with auto-focus: from time to time it will be erratic at focusing (in continous mode) and from time to time it will put the D100 in "Err" mode plain and simple until it is switched off-on. I'm waiting for Sigma to re-chip it as the, very kind, person I talked to here in the UK said it may solve my problems. He didn't sound 100% positive, though.

On the other end of the spectrum, I have a 17-35 f2.8-4 EX and it works perfectly. I'm looking at either the 24-70 you're mentionning or the 28-70 f2.8 EX that's been around a bit longer. Now, I'm confused...

Optically, I'm very happy with both lens and would gladly go for sigma again... It is the AF of the 70-200 that has been driving me nuts making about half my shots blurred when I was taking pictures at a football match recently. Fortunately it was nothing important. I hope the re-chipping will solve this. And if I do end up buying one or the other mid-range zooms, I'll have to make sure all is fine before I pay... I guess that's why a professional wouldn't even bother looking anywhere else than Nikon...

.. I consider Sigma a short-term lens solution. They can appear quite a bit of a bargain and have very good optics, some are even sharper than the Nikkor but their long-term use and abuse is questionable.

For the long term a new Nikkor, serviced bi-annually should be a lifetime’s investment.

Thanks, I will email him. Any information is good. I like the lens and want to figure out a way to use the thing.
