Sarah,

Let me suggest you to look for some newer models, the W300 is a great model and has a larger sensor than the new ones, still imo they take na edge over the W300, some wider DR, more zoom and I guess they have the detail level and high ISO performance of the W300.

I think the W380 might be a good choice, still never tried it, as I switched to Fujufilm - it suits my needs better.

Love it. I think the w300 may be underrated. I've got one, but don't use it much anymore since I got a a700. I should dig it out and use it! Thanks. - c

It is underrated, it has a sharp lens, a sensor 1/1,6" which is really big compared to the new models with 1/2,3" sensors. Some simple math gives us 31 MP/cm² pixel density compared to the new models' 50 MP/cm² pixel density, now is that better?

Also it has image stabilization allowing for lower ISO usages and a wider dynamic range setting giving some decent results in this task. Overall these make for a good little camera. Not a Fuji, Sigma or Leica, but still really good.

Would have to agree that the dsc-w300 has been underrated in the past I know I will not be letting go of mine in a hurry, love the Zeiss sharp lens as well as the optical viewfinder on bright days and to be able to adjust the noise reduction, contrast, sharpness and color saturation in the menu, i think what happened here people were not prepared to or understood how these features on the W300 were much better than the lower model W series and were not prepared to pay Sony extra for them.

Will there be a large sensor W400 this year? who knows

What I think we see is that the W300 is becoming for Sony what F31 was for Fuji - an older model edging newer models for years, actually the price changed the same way - the legendary F30 became very rare and very expensive after it was discontinued and that is what we see happening with the W300 now, no matter how underestimated it was by the under-qualified for it Sony P&S compacts target group.

Here is another sample shot taken with the W300, it was done just to show how much detail it can retain at full crop, no artistic purpose, downsized to 1600x1200 as it is huge - a bit more than 13MP:

and here is a full 100% crop from the image, for pixel peeping:
