Courage to photograph strangers? Enlighten me please....

I travel a lot and yes the NHS has it's faults, mainly being because it is underfunded. But it is great compared with most countries, especially the USA's system which everyone from the president down admits is a failure.

As for the recent demo. This is one particular item close to my heart as a photographer and that is why I demonstrated just as I have thoughout my life against things I think are wrong. Your points are weak. Think things through before making your next comment.

I love the UK although I'm not a flag of St George waver. You obviously found reasons to give up on your place of birth.
Jules
I'm FROM the UK, and whilst there are things I certainly miss - this brainwashed government agenda of policing everyone for no reason and not allowing those to think for themselves is not a part. I bet you think the NHS is the best system ever as well.

I thought I read you went to the protest recently, if so - why? You obviously adore all things pushed your way by the powers that be, why make a stand for anything?

You take a discussion and introduce threats of violence. That says it all really doesn't it? And remember you were the first to describe me in derogatory terms in this discussion. Would you like me to point out the thread? You are grasping at straws here aren't you?
Jules
Talking the language of an idiot? You very very obviously have NO IDEA what you are talking about. Ever spent any time on the Mexican border? Thought not. You have yet to intellectually counter anything I've stated.

You want to talk about crime stats? Mention points of entry as well.

It must be so easy for you to sling insults behind a keyboard, what a tiny man you are.

I shall not be revisiting this thread as you have caused a degeneration to insults. You very clearly have a one sided view with little experience on which to base it. I can assure you that in this country, were you to insult someone to their face in the ways in which you have insulted me in this thread, you WOULD get to experience a hairy situation more often than not. You really need to learn some manners as well as read quite a few books. Good luck with life and thanks for your irrelevant feedback that addressed nothing which I brought to question.

It's probably the lump in your pocket that attracts the violent element! Lol.

Nice pics rhlpetrus.

I shoot people everywhere, sometimes I ask them, sometimes I just do it, if person gets angry (almost never) I just delete it right there. Some shots:

Bryant Park NY

Wall St NY

Campinas, Brasil

A somewhat controversial series of ads for the Olympus E-P1 says "Don't be a tourist!" Personally, I think the ads are pretty silly, and when it comes to taking pictures of strangers I think it makes sense to act like a tourist--even if you're not! Tourists are given more latitude when it comes to taking pictures: everyone knows that tourists take a lot of pictures "to show to the folks back home." Being in a tourist area helps--everyone is taking pictures--and so does using a camera that's more typically used by tourists, such as a small digicam. It's harder to look like a tourist if you're carrying a DSLR with a long telephoto. (But, of course, some tourists do carry a DSLR with a long telephoto.)

As to the specific situation mentioned, taking pictures on public transit, that can be adapted to the "tourist" approach, taking pictures of places as you pass by and (incidentally, it seems) of people on the bus, streetcar, etc. Subways are more of a problem; I think people on subways are more wary or having their picture taken.

Pepper spray is a weapon just like a gun or knife.
Or a pencil, or a screwdriver. Anything can be used as a weapon! Your car can be a weapon!

You are paranoid and a jerk to "h00ligan". He doesn't deserve your crooked judgement.
You carry it. Without any other context i judge your handle by the only means i can. > The one word hooligan How would expect it to be judged?

You call me a jerk, I did not call you any name that you had not called yourself.
He called you a jerk because you are a jerk.

The desire to carry pepper spray along with the so-called tongue-in-cheek choice of screenname would appear to be indicative of a character that is in some way looking for or encouraging conflict.
"so-called tongue-in-cheek choice"??
What's wrong with you? You have absolutely no sense of humor.

When I find out h00ligan's size, I couldn't help but smile why he choose this screen name. It's impossible to miss his humor.
Combine that with the fact that in response to JuleJ's reasonable tone you immediately escalate with name calling, seems to provide ample evidence for judgement.
Jeez! Gimme a break! Go out and breathe some fresh air. Maybe take some pics.
This judgement may of course not be correct, but that doesn't make it unreasonable.
No, it's crooked!
Interesting photographic opportunities can present in less than safe areas, and with animals loose. I don't think that carrying pepper spray is a BAD idea..nor do I consider it a 'weapon'. It's a last measure of defense as stated - so why be a jerk to me. It's not like I said, Oh every time I go out, I take a glock. jeez. If you've never HAD to fight or rapidly flee, then no, you haven't been in particularly tricky situations.

As far as my SCREENNAME goes... that's a reference to football, and the fact I'm an expat. It's tongue in cheek. I guess maybe you have imagined posts I've made that sought to incite something..creative person!

So thanks for being a completely judgmental jerk to me for no apparent reason. Must feel good to judge others by taking things out of context whilst sitting behind a keyboard.

Maybe that energy would better be pointed elsewhere and toward something productive.

You are looking through a narrow tele. Try using a wideangle for a change.

He is not carrying the spray to use it against folks like you! Really, you have to quit using such narrow tele's.

He's carrying to defend himself (like I do too) against real hooligans and street muggers, overagressive dogs, outdoors for mountain lions, crazy coyotes and other predators.

It looks like you need a babysitter to explain you all this things in detail. That stands for "JulesJ" too.
That is very debatable ...and I'm not putting you down or anything, but my thinking is, if I have to do something like that, than I'm not going to live in that area. ...not gonna live my life walking around scared (and not saying you are - just voicing my opinion).

Judging by your irrationality, poor English and the inability to express yourself clearly, but just to write garbled pros I can only guess that your defence of Hooligan is an automatic national defense based on your own fear of being being attacked..... Verbally! It's paranoid, weapon carrying, limited intelligent beings like yourself, that are the danger in this world.

I think you forgot to take your vitamins today.

Don McC didn't ventured by himself into the jungles of Vietnam. He tagged along with the troops which (you need to be told) were armed to the teeth (being combat troops)
Why in the world would he need a "weopon" for???

It's a good thing to have a pizza with you when you get stuck in the tube for hours because of a power outage or whatever police incident.
You haven't been visiting large urban areas too often, do you?

I don't want to let myself loose, but you really should consider a babysitter to explain this things in detail to you.
Did Don McCullin carry a weopon in Vietnam Hooligan? He spent years there and took some of the most memorable pictures of the war, often 'shooting' in extremely dangerous circumstances.
Jules
You're not getting pizza if a terror attack happens and you're stuck in a subway :D

There's a pigeon sitting on your brain, I just noticed. That explains.. Try not be so pompous...

You do realize I'm not an American right? I live here, but was not born here - and have traveled extensively. Including being robbed / mugged at knife point in France.

Carry on with your assumptions by all means.
Assumptions? Does it matter if you are American or Klingon whatever? People get robbed in world , France, USA anyplace. Streetwise are robbed less OK, fact of life. 'Traveled extensively' not always same as 'traveled wisely'. Better luck for future adventures.

How can you be so cheap? You are a pure breed Brit, don't you?

Jules, phleez, how can you get so low!!! You are a Brit, remember?
Calling names, rolling in the mud...
Remember, you carry a pigeon on your head!
Be proud of it!

appears bigger than his brain?
Hmm...
But he's a Brit, and I speak lesser english than him anyway.

Probably the the single greatest change I noticed when I got an Olympus EP1 is... it's virtually invisible. People might see it, but they don't care, don't give it so much as a second glance. A real contrast to when I have the dslr out.

Especially in these times of internet propogation of photographs, a large dslr with a large fast lens really draws attention, and can make people uncomfortable and questioning of your motives.

Not saying that's right, just the way it is.

5 posts in 35 minutes and 3 of them about the bird :). Hey Jules, you got yourself your very own stalker. So how much do you want for him or are you just going to let him tag along for the ride?

Shay

A "discreet" camera must be the choice for street photography. That's why the quiet and unobtrusive Leica was for so many years the king of street photography vs any loud clonking SLR in the film era.

Please pardon my curiosity, do you work in waste management industry?
There's so much garbage coming out of your mouth.
That would explain why so many pigeons ...
