Just made an error.

Saw a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 on ebay. I bought it by mistake. It was not the USM lens. Now I will very soon have this lens and the Tamron 28-75 f2.8 USM.
Now I have to sell one of them. I have a D700, which should I sell/keep.
I'm inclined to keep the Sigma as I want the 24mm end.
Suggestions and advice PLEASE.

You mean "HSM"? USM is Canon's.

The older DG model is not as good as the new HSM model, as you can see the new one cost twice as much. I had the 28-75 before, didn't like the bokeh tho.

Why are you asking us? Soon you will have both in your hands. Try them out, keep the one you prefer.

Is this opinion based on personal experience of are you just passing along something you read? In what way is the DG version not as good? I own the Sigma 24-70mmf2.8 non HSM version and it is absolutely stellar. It's sharp wide open and has the creamiest smooth bokeh like a professional lens costing three times as much. The focus is not quiet like HSM, but it is so fast that the minimal "noise" for a half a second is a non-issue. The newer HSM version for double the price has HSM (the only plus), is heavier and has harsh bokeh, so how is that better?

I urge the OP to thoroughly test the Sigma 24-70mm when you get it, as there is much copy variation. If it's a good one, it can't be beat IMO.

I've been on Dpreview since June 2006. Unfortunately, some posting history has been lost along the way...

Thank you for your help.

There is an option for the seller to offer the second highest bidder the winning bid if the winning bidder bows out. Send him an email and see what he says. Tell him you made a mistake.

John

...couldn't hurt to try.

Another note - it's actually called a "second chance offer". The second highest bid is probably a dollar or so less than yours. You could offer the guy five dollars or something like that for hassle. That and the seller knowing that you really don't want the lens will make him think of "bad Feedback" and it may give him incentive to try.

How much was the shipping - more than five dollars anyway?
Just giving some ideas...

...another note: I was a "powerseller" for years. During that time, I would much rather have a happy buyer than an extra dollar.

If it doesn't work, who knows, maybe you can turn it around and sell it for more than you bought it for...
