AF Assist Illuminator

I seem to be having problems with the AF Assist Illuminator, I have times when it just doesn't come on at all, however dark conditions are and however much I check the settings, other times it is faultless. I gave up last night with it after changing all the batteries and still not being able to make it work, only to find that it works fine this morning. Perhaps the 'Fuji Fairy' paid a visit while I was asleep! Has anybody else been having any problems?

Michael,

make sure the AF selector is on S(ingle) and NOT C(ontinuous). It happened to me quite a while ago

Hi Martino,

I,m pretty sure I did check that, but it is good advice. Anyway. just see how it goes, fine at the moment.

I don't use the AF Illuminator....S2 focuses very good without it.

When light levels drop so low, I pop on my SB25 flash which has it's own AF illuminator. The S2 built in flash is very limiting and don't use much. I bought the sb25 on Ebay for $150usd.

The AF Iluminator will only work if you have the focus point set in the middle

when I first got the camera I thought there was something wrong and relized it was coming on only when in the center then I confirmed in the manual that this is the way it works

Chris, I am sure you are correct, I must have not noticed that the focus point was not in the centre. I didn't realise it had to be in the centre, I missed that in the manual. Also, I think it was Boris who said you don't need the illuminator with the S2, with the Nikkor 17-35 I have, which is the only lens I have tested properly, the focusing is fantastic in nearly all conditions without the illuminator.
