I currently use DPP to process my RAW files then ship the jpegs over to i photo as I am a Mac user, I tried a trial version of Aperature but didnt realy get to grips with it. My question is I am rather confused where to start with Photo Shop and whats the cheapist way, can i simply buy element 8 and off I go or do i need an earlier version to support it.
Thanks

Photoshop is a $700 full featured program marketed largely to professionals. Photoshop Elements is a complete stand-alone program. It has 90 - 95% of the functionality of Photoshop but is marketed to consumers. Therefore it costs only $99.00. IMO it is one of the best deals around.

Thanks, if thats the case then thats a great deal compared to aperature or Lightroom,

even though i still do, probably 90% of my post processing in DPP. for those shots that i think need a little more,i think elements is well worth the price. it is my understanding that there is very little that Photoshop does that can't be done in elements though maybe a little

i am beginning to suspect that those who say i have snapped are not referring to my photography.

And further to what Oliman said, I understand that Elements 7 has nearly all the functionality of Elements 8, but is cheaper, of course.

You can download a free 3 month trial of E7 too.

Looking for the spine tingle.

Thanks for that always good to save some cash at £69.99 it looks pretty good value.

You can sometimes purchase a full blown version of PS that is a year or two old that is still registerable for really cheap. Look at Royal Discount and see what you can get it for. I got CS2 for $230 two years ago and it came with the book and I was able to register it just fine. Deals are out there if you look..

About a week after I bought Elements 8 for $99 my son-in-law talked me into going Christmas shopping with him on black Friday. Up until this last year you wouldn't have caught me dead in ANY store on black Friday, but I'm here to tell you I had a ball. Saw Elements 8 in Staples for $50! Also got a years supply of CF cards at a bargain. Of course the next week Wal Mart started carrying 200X 4GB cards at the same price as the 100X they've always had.

So I have Photoshop 7 (the non-elements version) and I found out their is no RAW conversion available for it..... but that instead, I need Photoshop 'Elements' 7... or Elements 8.

So, I was starting to think 'Elements' was the expensive, pro version.

Now Oilman, you have referred to 'Photoshop' a few times, but you didn't say, "Photoshop 7", or "Photoshop 8"......

Anyway, it just seems odd to me that the "expensive pro version" does not have RAW capabilities, but the cheaper, consumer grade "Elements" version comes standard with it (at least Elements 8 does.... and Elements 7, has an available plug in)

I bet if my buddies company has any new PS programs, it will be the $700 pro version of straight "Photoshop" {again, not sure if that would be followed by an 8, or whatever} That's just the kind of stuff his company buys.... of course they get super deals on like a few hundred copies at a time.....

But anyway, wouldn't that be a %$%^ if my buddy gave me a copy of the latest, greatest $700 PS program, and it couldn't handle raw ? Huh ?

Hmmmm,

Photoshop 7 is an old version, which was followed by Photoshop CS, then CS2, CS3 and currently CS4. CS4 includes the latest version of Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) to process RAW files.

Anyway the RAW files from my XSi cannot be opened by the ACR in Photoshop CS, which I own. So I downloaded Adobe DNG Converter (free from Adobe website) and this converts my XSi's RAW files so CS can open them. Not an elegant solution, but sure beats having to come up with more bucks to upgrade every year.

Hope this helps.

Pro 1 XSi Please bear with me. I am a slow learner.

If you really need the capability of the full blown photoshop but lack the funds for it, you may want to try the GIMP. It is highly regarded, free, and has a HUGE community providing new add-ons to give you more features.

Hey, Fish!

When someone refers to "Photoshop" they could be referring to Elements or the "Creative Suite". CS is the $700 program. Both Elements and CS use the Adobe Camera Raw (ACR) plugin for processing RAW files. The latest version of ACR used with the latest version of CS or Elements will handle the RAWs from your T1i! I have CS2 but it will not accept the latest ACR and so I cannot process the RAWs from my XSi without converting to .dng.

Rest assured that if your buddy gets the latest version of CS for you that you will definitely be able to handle your RAWs!

When you get down to the nuts and bolts of photography, the results depend on the 'nut' behind the camera!

See the 'Plan' in my 'Profile' for my current equipment.

Fish:

The RAW converter that comes with Photoshop CS4 is similar to the one you have with LR. I believe the LR version still has some additional features, but it is better than the one that comes with Photoshop Elements. The reason Photoshop 7 does not have a RAW converter for the 500 is that it is an 10 year old program and is no longer supported by Adobe.

Even though Photoshop is the high dollar alternative, your version is old enough that you will find Photoshop Elements 8 to be far superior to it.

I also have Photoshop 7. Two questions:

1) Can you list the tools in Photoshop Elements 8 that do not work in 16-bit?

2) Also, can you use Layers in 16-bit?

thanks,

rich

Careful photographers run their own tests.

Neither multiple layers nor the clone tool will work in 16 bit in Photoshop Elements 7. I assume the same is true for 8. There are workarounds developed by people on the web to use multiple 16 bit layers in Photoshop Elements but I have not experimented with these techniques. The process is a bit cumbersome.

There are other tools in PSE that only work in 8 bit as well. If you are really hardcore, this may be the best reason to spend the extra $600 for Photoshop CS4
