I havn't been on the forum lately with the new job and working a lot of hours at night but I wanted to share a cool Li-Ion battery pack I bought called the Digipower DPS-9000...

Here's some photos of it mounted on my Uzi and E-10 to give you an idea of what it looks like on the camera...does not get warm and the camera is comfortable to hold with it mounted...
http://www.pbase.com/mofongo/batterypack

Unlike other battery packs that have long cords that get in the way and you must carry in your pocket or clip to your belt, this one mounts to the bottom of the camera with the tripod mount and you can also attach the camera to a tripod with it on...it also has a "gas gauge" with 5 lights that tell you the power status...comes with a AC charger and a car charger along with cables for all different model cameras...

It works great with my E-10, Uzi and C3000 and will work with over 200 camera models...(no, I am not affiliated with the company)

I havn't had a chance to shoot enough to run it out but one guy on the Oly SLR forum took over 400 shots with one on his E-10 on one charge in all conditions (flash used, sleep mode off, LCD postview on, previewing shots etc...)

I got tired of never knowing when the AA NiMH batteries would run out and missing shots having to change them...this thing will definately get you through a grueling all day shoot and than some...

I bought mine at CompUSA for about $73 but it can be found online cheaper...

Here's a review of it at imaging-resource.com...

I've always considered this option for my uzi, but I don't much like keeping the little door open. Hmmm.... I wonder If I can just drill a hole in the door and have the plug still seat properly. I could always find a small rubber or plastic plug to fill the hole when not needed. I just might look into that!

Since it has more power reserve I wonder if the flash would recycle faster !!???

Bob S,

Looks very cool! And hey, the price sure beats the Olympus LipoGrip!

BTW, we have been missing you here on the forums. Hope the new job is going nicely.

I checked out the linked review, and there was the mention of this pack delivering between 8.0 and 7.2 Volts depending upon the condition of discharge.

I recall an earlier thread where it was mentioned that the camera "..has it's own Voltage regulator... to support the internal components" or something close to that, which makes perfect senses.

My question is, how much overvoltage is acceptable for the UZI? I'm not willing to set up the test gear and risk damage to mine. Is there a way to determine if this is safe, other than to say the photogrphed UZI and EZI seem to have no problems?

Maybe I should check the available voltage from a fresh set of 1600's that I'm using?

Just thinking out loud and wondering.

Any ideas?

Nice to see you back with us Bob, and thanks for the post.

John, I was wondering the very same thing...My guess would be the proper cord may tone down the voltage also....I've seen ac adapters that are universal with no visable means of regulation other than the proper tip for the plug....I'm guessin the plug reduces the output....

I have one of the earlier Digipower packs but quit using it because of the cord always being in the way and, like Rooski, I was concerned about the door being open and possibly getting broken off.

It would be great for tripod or monopod use where the open door didn't seem to be that much of a problem but for regular carry around use I'd stick with batteries. Most of my longest sessions I am using a tri or mono pod so guess I will put it on my Xmas list.

Just don't see many great barn shots anymore - we miss you.

John, If it's any comfort, the Digipower list does specify the Uzi (2100) as being compatible with this powerpack. Regards, Jim N'AZ

The way to effect Voltage regulation on DC currents requires an AC-DC converter and back again after the regulation, and this is not apparent in what I'm seeing. As far as I know direct DC current regulation is not easily done.

The review actully mentioned that the measued output varried from 8.0 to 7.2 Volts, and I would suspect that this would be measured at the cable input connector, at least that is where I would measure it. I saw no evidence that there is any control equipment in the various supplied cables.

It may not be a problem at all though. The camera MUST have a regulator because of the circuitry involved. I believe that this should prevent any problems, and we have one user who is using this product successfully with our two most favored cameras. I think that it is safe, but am just looking for some additional feedback to substantiate this.

I tried to search the "Compatible" list but got nowhere.

I have long suspected that SDS is linked to Voltage / current issues where a condition exists that abuses the components of the UZI, and is Voltage / cuuernt related. This is just a hunch based on the threads I have read concerning this subject, but it seems plausable that there is something connected between these issues.

I'll be interested to see if some of the EE types here have a view on this.

Thanks for the tip. I hope your new job is agreeing with you and that you are adjusting to the different hours.

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the well wishes on the new job and glad I'm missed around here...

The new job is going well but the hours don't leave much time for the forum, I try to spend my waking hours with my wife...

Here's the link to the compatability chart on the DPS-9000:
http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/DPS9000/DigipowerCompatChart.JPG

I know it's safe on all the cameras listed and I talked to Mike Mizrahi, one of the product developers and he assured me the E-10 is safe also, although not on the list due to an oversight...he said he is making a new list with the E-10 and E-20 on it...the only Oly cameras it does not work on is the 3 volt Oly Brio...

The 1-800 # on their website did not work but I used (718) 492-0220 to talk to them in Brooklyn NY, if you have any concerns talk to Mike...

i have had the battery for a month or two, and it kicks butt

lasts forever

the flash recharges faster

i use it on my uzii and i leave batterys in the camera and have the battery on the bottom , if i run out of power i just unplug it

lion, means it doesnt have memory

i have seen them for 50 bucks

it comes with cords for many cameras

can be charged in you car

battery has led's on its side for for power meter

bottom line, its a little ugly but so is the uzi , performance is the main and only thing i want . i am glad i bought it

Does the flash recharge twice as fast ???

Relax a bit Olyboy, no danger at all, the Uzi is on the compatibilty list and many others besides myself have used it with no problems...I company such as Digipower would not open themselves up to lawsuits by promoting such a product if it was unsafe to use...

It uses different cables for different cameras...

Great product!

hi bob,

can we do something to somehow manage to come up with some solution on connecting this power pack to UZI without having to keep the compartment cover open?
