Another Aperture 3 hint (a Dutch Aperture 3 book)

Those are well know dutch technical books, so there might be soem truth in there :-D Would be nice to see what aperture 3 could bring.

Not that I'm missing anything big in aperture 2.

The author of that Dutch book, who I see every morning when I look in the mirror, has published a statement on his website. He says that a release date of mid February 2010 is completely unsubstantiated and that he doesn't know who made that up. If that book is published, a release date in May is more realistic.

It's in Dutch only, but Google translate does a poor, but still almost understandable translation of it.

It would be a minor relief just to know that Ap3 was on its way and that Apple were serious about supporting it into the future.

Apple could do lots to improve Aperture. Local non-destructive edits for one, global presets rather than brick-by-brick, apply presets upon import, improve the web galleries in general, make it possible for third party developers to add galleries, add color labels and flags, make it run faster...

But of course, your NDA doesn't allow revealing any specifics. [g]

It's just nice to know how to pace one's anticipation, Johan.

It would also still lobby for a release of the software in perhaps February, as books are generally published a month or two later in order to get any last minute "tweaks" incorporated into the final print. I'm thinking an announcement around PMA time frame. And yes, it really is good to know how to calibrate one's expectations ;-)

Only my opinion. It's worth what you paid for it. Your mileage may vary! ;-}

I really would like to see Aperture take a couple of steps forward with some new things that even Lightroom cannot do, not just respond, very late, to the Lightroom competition with "me-tos". Also, I would like to see Apple take a much more aggressive stance about timely new camera updates, and I would like them to go back and support some of the legacy cameras that people still own. I would just like to see a more concentrated approach to a program that is supposed to be the Photographic equivalent of Final Cut Pro.

No, one thing should be clear: I do not have much more information than anyone else in this forum. I do have 'inside information' that a new version of Aperture is indeed on its way, but that's about all I know right now. I don't have a beta copy, so I didn't have to sign any NDA's because there is nothing I can disclose. What I say here on how Apple could improve Aperture, is purely what I think Apple could do . It's not based on what I know that Apple will do .

Agree there. Some basic pro functionality -- like the ability to keep the Library on a network drive, accessible by multiple users simultaneously -- would be very welcome.

My bad - I was under the impression from your first input here that you authored the book in question - and would have had some sort of hands-on with v3 development to do that.

Given that Aperture 2 was announced in mid/late February, I wouldn't be surprised at all with a mid/late February PMAish time frame for an Aperture 3 anouncement. Then again, Apple marches to the beat of its own drummer. Why make a big photography-oriented announcement right when others are making their big photography-oriented announcements. Apples's lack of involvement in CES, its moving away from Macworld - if anything, maybe Apple specifically doesn't want to announce Ap 3 around PMA. Here's hoping for an earlier announcement, perhaps next Wednesday! (p.s., I was a little bummed when I heard the rumor that an updated iLife would be announced next Wed., as I've been hoping that Apple has been devoting its internal photography talent to the Aperture 3 update, not to another iPhoto update).

Your first impression is correct. Your second one is not. I'm also still waiting for V3 so I can start writing the update of my book. Unfortunately, Apple is much more secretive than for example Adobe, who does welcome authors of books about their products into their beta programs.
