Need medium sized flash for KM 5D

A flash is a very important part of your camera system... as far as the 5D, there was/is no specific flash designed for it.. KM has a 3600, and a 5600, Sony has the same numbers with the Sony Prefix and will work on the 5D. My suggestion is to get the best flash that you can afford.. the one with the most power and the most options... the reason I say this is because this flash will work well into the next decade..a flash will be good well into 2020... so the cost of use over ten years makes a flash unit cheap when the cost is spread out over ten years..the better quality flash will be compatible for a long time even with New Sony offerings well into the future. My suggestions is to get the 5800... its not a 100 dollar flash but then a 100 dollar flash will become a disappointment quickly...its like buying a car without electric windows and air conditioning,.,,and heated seats... you dont need them but it certainly makes things much more comfortable over the years of ownership.. I also say, " I can not afford to buy anything too cheap" it just costs too much to buy what you should have bought in the first place. and then the other one gets thrown into the drawer..and the cost loss is added to the price of the one you should have bought in the first place.

The Sony HVL-42 is the medium flash, HVL-20 the small one that is better than just having the camera's own flash, and HVL-58 the big one that does everything.

I have the older Minolta 2500D, 3600HSD and 5600HSD (Smallest to biggest).

It all depends what he wants to do. I find I use the smallest, least sophisticated one the most because it's easier to carry around (good for parties in a small place). But the big one really shines at wedding receptions and other big events, and for when one want to do all the other really neat flash stuff one reads about (the medium HVL-42 can do that too, but the 3600HSD wasn't as sophisticated).

Sigma and Metz also make sophisticated flashes for KM/Sony, the Metz generally being dearer, and Sigma cheaper (but still pretty good). But beware if hunting for these on Ebay or other internet sites. If they say they are for Minolta, they will not work on KM or Sony. You have to find them saying they're for Sony.
