A few New IR shots

nice reflections in the water James. nicely done
Hi All,

I took a bunch of IR shots at a local park yesterday. We had a day
with lots of puffy clouds, so it was great for IR pictures. I've
only processed a few so far, but I wanted to share them. Here are
a few of my favs:

These were all taken with the F707 using just a Hoya R72 (it wasn't
too bright out) in Nightshot mode.

I also used Contrast Masking on some of them, which I've never done
with my IR shots before. Let me know what you all think.

Hope you like them.

James

Very nice job, James. Just got my IR filter yesterday, so I was very interested in your pics. Several folks here have lamented getting soft images with shallow DOF with Nightshot. Yours look very sharp (although they have been downsized). I thought the contrast mask might be making the difference, so I tried it, but the contrast was very soft on my test shots. I've had good luck with contrast masks on color images, so I think I am doing it right.

1) How was the contrast of the original? Did you adjust the contrast of the original before making the mask?

2) It what way did the contrast mask improve the image?

3) Did you use a tripod or polarizing filter?

Hi Chuck,

To my eye, a contast mask in IR seems to seems to enhance the contrast between light and dark in the image. I don't actually use in on every image, as sometimes it really doesn't work. Also, all of these IR shots were taken in Nightshot/Auto mode with the Hoya IR72 filter and a ND2 filter to further darken the image. Also, EV was set to -2 to use as slow a shutter speed as possible.

1) The contrast of the original images was good. I didn't really mess with the contrast before using the contrast mask.

2) Above

3) I didn't use a tripod or Polarizer.

Hope this helps,

James

Hi Razi,

Actually, for these I used the Hoya R72 with a ND2 filter to further darken the image. I also set EV to -2 to use the slowest shutter speed possible. Normally I have to stack an ND2, ND4, and polarizing filter in order to keep the image dark (in bright sunlight). This day things were overcast, so I only needed the ND4.

The R72 has been on of my favorite additions to my camera so far. :)

James
Wow..you did it. Those are the best IR shots I have ever seen. I
like the second pic very much....but all of them are great. You
mentioned you have used only the Hoya R72; really?....if the
answer is yes, I have to save some money to buy one ....this
year...lol.
