For my new D700 I have a 17-35 and 50mm std lens; and will soon acquire some 70/80mm based zoom (possibly the 70-200 VR).

However, every now and then I go on holidays/trips where I need to travel lite and could do with a single zoom starting at 24mm or 28mm and going up to 120mm or more. Basically the common type lens most people have with their D60 and D90.

Not wanting to spend too much on it (budget $500 or less - it will just be for occasional trip usage), what lenses would people recommend ?
and I don't mind if they are second-hand or non-nikon.

the Nikon 24-120mm VR lens. It doesn't get a lot of respect around here, but it is pretty good.

28-105 offers a lot. Macro and a nice wide to medium tele range. Great for portraits, very small the combination of the 28-105 and a 70-300 vr is a nice kit to travel with.

Tamron 28-300/VC is the FX equivalent of the Nikon DX 18-200/VR. Its VC (image stabilisation) mechanism compares favourably with the VR mechanism in the Nikon. I've owned and used both lenses, and the Tamron is well-suited for travel/vacation use on FX bodies.

If you cruise the eBay listings for this lens (make sure you filter out any grey-market listings, you'll want the Tamron USA 6-year warranty), and you take advantage of BING cashback on eBay (I think the rebate is 8%, but it does fluctuate on occasion), you should be able to purchase one of these lenses for $500 or less, shipped.

I've had one for a few months and really like it as a walk-around lens. It's not light. It's well made and quite small. The fact that it focuses really close is very nice. Not a true macro, but just fine for a walk-around lens. The fact that it's pretty heavy makes me think that it's well built and it feels good. Just the right size.

i like travelling with the 50/1.4 G, its light, sharp and versatile

Try nikon 28-105, great lens for the money it could be bought ...
I have been getting outstanding results with the Nikkor 28-105 D and it has 0.5:1 Macro as well.

This lens has been on my D700 80% of the time I have been shooting and it is fantastic.

most of the photos in this album was taken with nikon 28-105

Hi,

You could try the 24-120 of Nikon. It's not the best lens by means of image quality especially wide open on DX , but it's really not bad either, and on a FX camera it's even a good performer

Again do not forget that most reviews of the 24-120 are based on DX camera usage and not on FX camera usage, it performs significant better on FX.

As others mentioned the 28-105 is a very good choice also.

IMO the 24-70 f2.8 is the only choice for a "one lens" solution but considering your budget, that doesn't exactly work. FWIW, for the purposes of travel photography, and considering the lenses that you already have, I would probably take along your two present lenses plus a manual focus 105mm f2.5.

It's not a truly bad lens but it is a compromise in terms of image quality. A lot of people go for lenses like that when they travel but I never quite understand why. For me my travel photos are the shooting that is most important to me, so it would make no sense at all to buy a D700 and then leave my best optics at home.

Yes,

A travel lens is often seen in comparison a bit as a 'house wine' :-) A good payable alternative to click away :-)

Because travel photography is usually also a part of my income I mostly drag a lot with me for different circumstances. If I would use only FF and I have to use only one zoom lens covering 24 to lets say 100mm I would choose the 24-120 as well.

A ptiy the lens has such bad imago due to the use and reviewing on DX.
